Micah 7:5 – Do not trust a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Even with the woman who lies in your embrace guard the words of your lips.
Micah 7:6 – For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in law— a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.
Micah 7:7 – But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.
At the height or climax of selfishness, you can’t even trust family members. God wants us to think of Him first, then others and ourselves last. Selfishness wants us to begin with ourselves and end with ourselves.
There are many philosophies and pieces of seemingly good advice that emphasize that beginning and ending with yourself is healthy mentally. We are reminded that we are in this alone. We are reminded that we came alone and will die alone. Emphasis is that our existence is of a first priority over anyone else. Seems like good advice, but is it?
The same thinking encourages individuals who don’t feel like having children not to have them. Children are too much. Children inhibit happiness. Children should not be allowed to ruin happiness. On the same basis a mother can have abortion. Abortion not just because of being at a medically risky situation, but based on just desiring a bother free life. Seems like good advice, but is it?
Prophet Micah speaks at a time when evil was at its climax in Israel. God was about to punish Israel for their relentless sinning. The prophet discusses the on going evil. Leaders chosen by God are even conspiring to do wrong! Religious leaders conspiring to do evil. Justice cannot be found because there is a conspiracy among leaders.
Micah 7:3 – Both hands are skilled in doing evil; the ruler demands gifts, the judge accepts bribes, the powerful dictate what they desire— THEY ALL CONSPIRE TOGETHER.
Where there is conspiracy, only the few who conspire will have their way. If you are not part of those who conspire, you will never have justice. You will be denied what is rightfully yours and you won’t have recourse. Prophet Micah tells us that when we see cartels within the society and church conspiring to have their way, it is a sign that evil has reached its climax and therefore God’s intervention and punishment is inevitable.
Prophet Micah also tells us that at the height of all evil is selfishness. People become so self-centered and nobody else matters. When selfishness is at its apex, you can’t even trust any family member.
Selfishness will desecrate sacred relationships within the family. Within a family where betrayal would not have been thought of, would now be unsafe. Even within your family you are careful about what you say because it is not safe!
A man’s enemies are members of his own household. A Christian is safer with non-Christians. A pastor or religious leader is safer with unbelievers than with fellow pastors and religious leaders. Believers discover you have a chance of a genuine and safer interaction with unbelievers. This is the height of selfishness and betrayal. When a man’s enemies are members of his own household.
When you are more likely to get justice in a secular court than in a religious process. A man’s enemies are members of his own household. The height of sin and selfishness. Shortly before God’s justice and punishment is unleashed.
A man’s enemies are members of his own household. Don’t we live at a time when people are murdered within the family. Married couples killing each other. Parents killing children. Children killing parents. Relatives killing each other. The streets at the most ungodly hour are safer than homes where loved ones are. This is the height of selfishness and self-centeredness. Court cases of family members against family members! A man’s enemies are members of his own household.
At such evil times, Prophet Micah says, He has a solution for himself. “But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.” When you can’t trust nor be safe with society and religious leaders, trust in God. When you can’t be safe in the family of God, the church, trust in God. When family becomes more dangerous than being with strangers, trust in God. Wait for God to act in your favor!
Wait for God to punish those who conspire in society and in church. Wait for God to punish those who have made the church unsafe. Wait for God to judge between you and members of your household. God will punish the evil and save His people.
Do not despair. Do not leave the church because of evil leaders and people within. Do not leave the ministry because of those who conspire. Do not abandon your family unless your life is threatened. Hang in there. God will save us. Do not despair. Be calm and wait for salvation from God. It may delay but it will come. Wait!
If you are in a desperate situation, call on God He will hear you. Look at what prophet Micah says, “But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.” My God will hear me.
May God hear you. May God answer you. May God solve all our challenges. May God be our source of security in these insecure times. May God hear us, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
