Ephesians 2:15
by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace,
In the letter to Ephesians, Paul tells them how they were saved. He tells them they were wicked and under the control of the devil. He tells them that they were hopelessly lost until God who is rich in mercy stepped in and saved them. Paul emphasizes that no one in the whole world deserves salvation. God has saved us by grace. Grace is a favor we will never deserve. Salvation is a favor to us!
Apostle Paul further tells Ephesians that their situation was even worse off. Since they are Gentiles and Christianity came through Jews, they were treated by fellow human beings as foreigners in the church. Jewish Christians insisted that Gentile Christians must get circumcised. That demand created hostility between the two groups who were enemies even before receiving salvation.
Paul tells the church that Christ was and is aware of the hostilities. Christ came in through the genuine gospel of Paul and crushed the barrier of hostilities. Christ ended the existence of Jews and even that of Gentiles. In our text today, he says Christ created a new humanity. A new race a new tribe new humanity!
Anyone who has accepted Jesus ceases to be a Jew or gentile, he or she becomes a Christian. Anyone who has accepted Christ is not American, European, African, or Asian but a Christian. Christianity is a new race a new tribe new humanity!
In Christ, there is no barrier of hostilities. In Christ, there is no distinction between races, nationalities, tribes, education, or even classes of the rich and poor. In Christ, all barriers and hostilities cease. In Christ, there is only one humanity. A new race new tribes new humanity!
If you still identify with the groups of old humanity, you are not in Christ. If you still speak for and defend your race, nationality, and tribe, you are not a Christian. Jesus created a new race a new tribe new humanity!
We as a church can reach out to the races, nations, and tribes. We do that because they are not converted. When we reach out to the unconverted we recognize their tribes, nations, and races. Once they get converted, they lose their identity with their nationalities, tribes, and races, they belong to the new humanity created by Jesus. A new race, a new tribe, and new humanity!
We must choose where to belong. We can continue belonging to our hell-bound hopeless hatred-ridden races, tribes, and nationalities or we can become part of the new race, tribe, and nationality. To attempt to belong to both is the problem facing Christianity today. You want to be loyal to both camps. It is not possible. To attempt to belong to both camps is to reject the new humanity that Jesus created. A new race, a new tribe, and new humanity!
Philippians 3:20
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
No truly converted Christian can still identify with the sin-ridden hostile groups referred to as my race, my tribe, and my nation. We belong to a new humanity whose citizenship and interest in heaven. May God save us from attachment to races, tribes, and nations. May we fully belong and be committed to the new humanity, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
