Psalms 9:3 (NIV) – My enemies turn back;
they stumble and perish before you.
In Psalm 9 David dialogues with God and at the same time speaks about God. David has two items to address. First, the enemies who have hurt him and he needs to revenge, and the enemies who are actively seeking to destroy him. Secondly, David addresses the plight of the needy, the afflicted and disadvantaged people.
This Psalm is relevant to all of us, because we could be having enemies or people we feel they hurt us and revenge is in order. We could be having enemies who are actively pursuing to destroy us. We could also be those enemies to someone else. This Psalm is for all us who have enemies or are enemies.
This Psalm is for us who are needy, afflicted, helpless in the hands of any leaders and rulers. When the mighty and powerful enjoy unrestrained oppression of the helpless, this Psalm gives hope. This Psalm also gives notice to oppressors, that they won’t eternally oppress others, because soon they will be victims of God’s justice!
This Psalm is for all of us who care about evil things happening around us. This Psalm is a promise that even though it doesn’t seem like it, God is still in control and He will reign in enemies and oppressors. God will grant justice to the oppressed.
Psalms 9:3 (NIV) – My enemies turn back;
they stumble and perish before you.
If you have God. If God is on your side. If you worship God and pray to Him. If God is your source of hope, then God will be your solution to your enemies. When your enemies approach you, God will cause them to turn back. When your enemies execute their evil plans against you, God will cause them stumble and perish as you watch. God is the promise and solution against enemies!
If you are the enemy against anyone who belongs to God, this is your notice. God will make you turn back from His people. You won’t approach them to harm them. If you attempt to trigger the downfall of anyone who belongs to God, that day you will stumble, fall and get embarrassed in their presence before you finally perish. Therefore, be warned!
Acts 5:34-39 (NIV) – 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men… 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
As the Sanhedrin considered to persecute Apostles and other believers, Gamaliel a respected and very wise member gave them advice. Be careful how you handle these people, or you run the risk of being in a fight against God. There are people whom if you fight, you are fighting against God. A war you are sure to lose!
Manage your anger and sense of being invincible and unstoppable. If you are against God you will end in embarrassment and destruction. You can’t win against God nor against those who belong to Him, however weak and helpless they may seem!
Psalms 9:12 (NIV) – For he who avenges blood remembers; he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.
God knows when and how we were hurt. God may seem to have allowed us to get hurt. The Psalm promises that the God who avenges blood also remembers. Even in what seems like a forgotten case where we were hurt and the matter is forgotten and settled, He will avenge because He remembers.
If you have hurt God’s people and you did it successfully without being stopped and the matter is forgotten and nothing happened to you to punish you, read this Psalm again. God remembers. God will avenge in His day and time of choosing. You will pay for it!
The Psalm tells us that God does not ignore the cries of the afflicted. His silence should not be misunderstood to mean He won’t respond to cries of those who suffer because they are helpless and needy. God does not ignore. Do not misinterpret His silence as ignoring those who cry out to Him.
God has not ignored you. God has not ignored your tears. God has not ignored your prayers. God has not ignored your cries. God does not ignore. God will respond to your cries!
Psalms 9:18 (NIV) – But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish.
The use of the word NEVER gives hope in this verse of the Psalm. God will NEVER forget the needy. Those who lack connections. Those who lack money. Those who are not lucky to be rich. Those who lack and can’t access what they desperately need. They are needy. God will NEVER forget the needy.
God will cause a child of the needy to excel and stand out. God will cause the needy to luckily one day get out of their desperation. God will bless the needy to have love, joy, happiness and contentment that those who have everything may envy. God will cause the needy not to feel their neediness and to actually live a fulfilling life in spite of their neediness. God will NEVER forget the needy!
God is the hope of the afflicted and He will NEVER perish. Whatever hope God has given the afflicted, it will NEVER perish. It may seem to delay, but it will NEVER perish. If your hope is in God, hang in there, it will NEVER perish.
As we go through life, may our hope NEVER perish. As we face active enemies who want us destroyed, may our hope of salvation from them NEVER perish. As our tormentors seem invincible and untouchable, may the hope of divine revenge NEVER perish. In our neediness and helplessness, may our hope NEVER perish. In Jesus name, Amen!
