Avoid False Optimism, Give It The Seriousness It Deserves

Jeremiah 6:14 – They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.

Jeremiah 6:15 – Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them,” says the LORD.

6:14  My people are broken—shattered!— and they put on band-aids, Saying, ‘It’s not so bad. You’ll be just fine.’ But things are not ‘just fine’!

6:15  Do you suppose they are embarrassed over this outrage? No, they have no shame. They don’t even know how to blush. There’s no hope for them. They’ve hit bottom and there’s no getting up. As far as I’m concerned, they’re finished.” God has spoken.

A good approach to life is to give it the seriousness it deserves. Don’t major on minors and don’t minor on majors. Give it the seriousness it deserves.

Optimism is good. Optimism is the compelling belief that all will be well. Optimism allows you to be less tense, less anxious, and less worried. Yet false optimism can trick you to relax and be comfortable when things are getting worse. Avoid false optimism and give everything the seriousness it deserves!

Jeremiah gives a sad story about Israelites in our Bible passage today. Jeremiah says the leaders, prophets and priests, have misled the people with false optimism, where there is none. The people are wounded seriously, leading to death, but the leaders in false optimism, say, peace peace, it shall be fine. God says, there will be no peace and things shall not be just fine. Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

God says through Jeremiah that as a result of false optimism the people aren’t taking their situation seriously. They don’t even know how to blush, the Bible says. Since they have not given it the seriousness it deserves, they will die. The only way to survive is to avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves.

Many students fail exams because they have been motivated that all shall be well somehow. Life is hard and you must work hard. It will not be fine somehow, you must worry enough to wake up and study. Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

People fail in life because they have false optimism. They say things shall be fine. They don’t budget. They don’t invest. They don’t plan. Then failure comes and they suffer while blaming everyone. If they had given life the seriousness it deserves, they would be in a better place. Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

The dangers of prosperity gospel is that it gives false optimism. Things you need won’t come to you just because you prayed. There must be work put in plus prayer. False teachers and preachers deceive the public that giving offerings and prayers will give you with ease what others are sweating for. That is false optimism and you will discover too late that it doesn’t work and you will have to get religious cliches to cover for your failures. Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

Some single people have delayed and advanced in age and it’s getting too late. They start with false optimism that it shall just be fine. They dismiss potential suitors saying it shall just be fine. Then suddenly when it’s getting too late blame game and false philosophies take over. False optimism is deadly sweet poison. Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

Marriage breaks because one partner ignores the concerns of the other. They say men are like that or women are like that. They believe all shall be just well. They think their partner is a toddler who will grow up or a patient who will recover. The ignored partner feels estranged and eventually calls it quits, then the other partner acts frantically when it’s too late. Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

Many of us treat spiritual things with false optimism. We lie to ourselves that any denomination is okay, but it’s not. We lie to ourselves that we will repent in the last minute, yet not everyone is lucky to have a last minute. We lie to ourselves that we can avoid worshipping with others as God instructed, and just be nice privately, it doesn’t work. What false optimism is killing you spiritually? Are you getting comforted by the wickedness of church leaders and active church members? You feel you are better than them and can make it without fellowship? Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

When you are sick, give it the seriousness it deserves. Follow medical advice. Rest of you must. Avoid what you should. Avoid false optimism of alternative medicine. You take herbs on false optimism then go die in a hospital when it’s too late to be helped. The same hospital you claimed gives poison or doesn’t know as much as you do. Avoid false optimism and have the surgery. Those who give you false optimism will fade away when it’s too critical and too late and you must now be managed in a hospital you castigated. Avoid false optimism and give it the seriousness it deserves!

Whatever it is in life, we must give it the seriousness it deserves. Too much seriousness in light moments issues is misplaced. Too little seriousness in serious issues is risky. May God grant us wisdom to judge correctly. May God save us from false optimism. May God forgive and save us from careless living that has made things this bad. May we be wise and courageous enough to give life the seriousness it deserves. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
