Suffering for Being a Christian
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

Problems are normal in this sinful life. Problems will always be there. We must learn to live with problems. Since problems will always come, how do you best address them? How do we minimize the damage brought by problems?

Apostle Peter tells the church to change their attitude towards problems. Change your attitude towards problems. Change your attitude by not acting surprised when problems come. Problems are part of this sinful life how can you act surprised? Do not behave as if something strange is happening to you.

Money always runs out do not act surprised. People get sick at any age in life, do not speak, and act as if something unique and strange is happening to you. Do not insinuate that you are bewitched and some people want to finish you, and by the way, even that is normal. Do not act surprised.

One family can have a funeral after the funeral. It is not a generational curse. It is not bad luck. It is life in a sinful world. Do not act surprised. Children from one family may have the same sickness, all may have bad marriages, or something wrong with them. Do not act surprised as if something unusual was happening to you!

It is not witchcraft so you keep referring to it. It is not jealousy by relatives and neighbors. It is life in a sinful world, do not act surprised as if something strange is happening. If problems come your way, the first thing to do is to have the right attitude. Please do not act surprised and treat it as a normal occurrence.

1 Peter 4:13
But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

The second best way to address problems is to be joyful. Be happy. Be glad. When trouble comes, smile about it. Smile like someone who seems cornered but keeps smiling because he knows one more way to escape. Be excited and happy as much as possible, this is how to best act when problems visit us!

1 Peter 4:14
If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

Thirdly, know that there is a blessing when problems always target us. If you suffer as a believer, you are blessed and will be blessed much more in the future. Facing problems means the Spirit of glory and God rests on you. If God allows problems to come your way, they will come with blessings of His own presence.

1 Peter 4:15
If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.

1 Peter 4:16
However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.

Fourth is that do not deserve the suffering you are going through. Do not suffer as a thief who has been arrested. If you deserve the suffering then there is no blessing in it. If you carelessly handle money, then suffer a lack of it, you deserve it. If you mistreat your partner and you suffer from a bad marriage, you deserve it. A christian should not deserve what they are going through.

1 Peter 4:19
So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Fifth and final is that be committed to God and do good. Suffering and problems should not separate us from God. Suffering and problems should not turn us into beasts. Suffering and problems should not make us bitter and indifferent to the plight of others. Remain committed to God and do good, in spite of your problems.

If you handle problems this way, you will emerge victorious daily and on that day. May it be so, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
