Proverbs 5:3-4
(3) For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,
and her speech is smoother than oil;
(4) but in the end she is bitter as gall,
sharp as a double-edged sword.
Proverbs 5:11
At the end of your life you will groan,
when your flesh and body are spent.
The end surely comes but we forget it at the beginning and in the middle. All troubles will have an end. All pleasures will have an end. The good and the bad will have an end. Everything will come to an end. But in the end…how shall it end?
The question is not whether it shall end, but how it shall end. It can begin well but how will it end? It can start in a bad way but how will it end? It could be at its climax best, but in the end …how shall it end?
Proverbs chapter five has words of wisdom warning people against adultery. Sons are told to avoid adulterous women. Solomon the wisest man to ever live, tells his sons that an adulterous woman has lips that drip honey. Very sweet. Solomon says that the speech of an adulterous woman is smoother than oil. But that is not where it ends. In the end, she is bitter and as destructive as a sword.
King Solomon tells the sons that if they interact with an adulterous woman, they will enjoy the beginning and middle of the whole affair. However, it will end in bitter tears. In the end, Solomon tells the sons, your life will groan and you will be spent or wasted. Therefore, Solomon wants them to be conscious of how it shall end. How shall it end?
Do not just be attracted to its present sweetness, but ask yourself, how shall it end? If you realize the guaranteed bitter end, you will lose interest in the current tempting sweetness. It is sweet but in the end, how shall it end?
It is sweet not to study but just waste time, watch movies, travel, and have fun, but in the end, you will have to read the term’s work in one night and the average or failing grade will be bitter. You may have to repeat some classes as your colleagues proceed to graduation. It begins as a sweet life in school but in the end, it is bitter and regrettable. How shall it end?
It is sweet to use money without saving. But in the end, when you are cornered by life, it is bitter to death. It is sweet to use money without returning tithes and offerings, but in the end, when God withdraws blessings, the accompanying losses make it bitter and painfully unbearable. How shall it end?
Alcohol and cigarettes and even other hard drugs are sweet to use. You get high and feel good. You are in the company of great friends. It is all sweet until in the end you get addicted and the consequences of addiction waste you, and your last years on earth are hopeless and helpless. How shall it end?
The relationship you are in today, how shall it end? The communication you are having, how shall it end? The ruthlessness of your life against those below you, how shall it end, when you can’t be ruthless anymore? How shall it end?
Only life in heaven has no end. Everything else on earth will have an end. You are enjoying it now. You are invincible now. You have silenced everyone now. But all these may take a million years, so to speak, but it shall end. How shall it end?
Dear God help us to always remember that there is an end coming and to consequently organize our life toward that end, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
