Exodus 8:21 – If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.
Exodus 8:22 – “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the LORD, am in this land.
Exodus 8:23 – I will make a distinction between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.’”
Some plagues of Egypt affected everybody. It didnt matter whether you are faithful to God or opposed to God. Some problems in life affect all of us. The good and the bad suffer these problems alike. Not all problems suggest or indicate that you are unfaithful to God. Some are just the common fate of all people.
Common sicknesses. Common causes of death. Common inability to understand certain subjects. Common incompetencies. Common relationship problems. Common finance problems. Common stresses. Egyptians who didnt like God and Israelites who were faithful to God suffered the same fate during some plagues of Egypt.
Our text of consideration today tells us that during the plague of swarm of flies, God decided that not everybody will suffer the same fate. God promised Pharaoh that He will now distinguish between His people the Israelites in Goshen and Pharaoh’s people. God can distinguish!
When the swarm of flies from God comes to trouble Egyptians, the Israelites in the neighborhood will not be troubled. God will empower the flies to know where to go and who to trouble. God will demostrate that He can make a distinction between Israelites and Egyptians. God can make the distinction!
God tells Pharaoh that as your people suffer helplessly, mine will be safe secure and untroubled. God tells Pharaoh that beginning the next day, it will be clear who belongs to God and who doesnt. God can make a distinction!
My prayer is that if I must suffer the common fate of all people, I be safe in God’s hands. I persevere and wait for God’s salvation. That I will not feel that belonging to God gives me entitlement to a better fate. That I will cling on the promise that God knows best and He has good plans amidst my pain.
My prayer is also that when God makes a distinction between His people and those who haven’t accepted Him, that I will be counted among His people. May I belong to God by all means. May I belong to God by faith, baptism and practice. May God count me among His people.
When trouble comes and God keeps His people safe, may I be among His people who are safe. May God make a distinction between me His child and others who are not. May God prove to the world through me that He keeps His people safe because He can make a distinction!
As I travel in vehicles and on the road, May God make a distinction between me and others. As I apply for jobs, May God make a distinction between my papers and those of others. As I seek treatment in a hospital, May God make a distinction between me and other patients!
As exam papers are marked, may God make a distinction between my papers and those of others. As houses are targeted by criminals, may God make a distinction between my house and the houses of other people. As businesses struggle, may God make a distinction between my business and others.
Dear God for all of us who belong to You, may there be a distinction between us and those who don’t belong to You. Make us Yours and make a distinction, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
