1 Timothy 6:3 – If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching,
1 Timothy 6:4 – they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions
1 Timothy 6:5 – and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
A point is a loaded summarized message. When an otherwise long message is summarized into few words, that is a point. A point stands alone and makes sense on its own. A point therefore is a sensible and clear message.
When someone asks you – what is your point? It means you are not clear and the listeners are struggling to summarize everything you said. When you have a point and you speak for long, the listeners can still summarize your message into a point or a few words. An example is that after a long meeting with managers, we were made to understand that the company must make profit or we get sacked. That is a point, a summary of a long meeting with managers.
Preachers must have a point. What will listeners summarize as your message today? Do you have a point? If you try to say everything, you run the risk of making no point. Listeners will struggle to report what you said.
Having beef with someone is to have a grievance against the person. Having beef with someone is having a complaint against the person. Having beef suggests tension and an unresolved issue.
Apostle Paul tells Timothy that there are people in church who whenever they speak, they have no point, instead they have beef with us. They contradict the teachings of the Apostles yet they have no point to pass across. They have beef with the Church.
All their key messages and sharing online has no clear point. What is clear is they hate the leaders. They feel they know better than everyone in church. In summary they have beef with the church.
They know a lot but they don’t go out to teach others, instead they stay within the church they dislike, because they have beef with us. The slightest opportunity is criticizing only. This is because they have beef with the church.
They remain quiet throughout when all is well. When the church or any of its leaders does a mistake, they get aroused in a frenzy. All of a sudden they are actively sharing online all the negative issues about the church. They have no point, they have beef with us.
Reformers had a point they were spreading around. Martin Luther had a point that the righteous shall live by faith. John Calvin had a point on predestation. William Miller and Adventists have a point that Jesus is coming soon. Ellen G White and Adventists have a point that her writings the lesser light is leading to the Bible.
Reformers had a point and not beef. They moved out the churches they didn’t agree with and moved on with the point they had and were known for. They avoided focusing on beef and instead focused on the point.
Apart from expressing disagreement with the church and its leaders – what is your point? Do you have another point if you aren’t proving everyone apart from yourself to be wrong? Do you have a point or beef with us?
Apostle Paul warns Timothy to be careful about people who have beef with the Church. They don’t mind an endless discussion with direct and indirect insults. They engage in controversies. You can easily get caught up. They have unhealthy interest in controversies. Unhealthy interest.
Malicious and ever suspicious the Bible says. In other words they thrive on conspiracies about people and the church. Without a conspiracy they have no news to share. It’s beef with the church and no point.
Finally the Bible says financial gain also drives them. It’s the money they get from donors, well wishers, sympathizers and hosts where they teach and preach. If they get money for seemingly being bold in criticism and sharing conspiracies of health and prophecies, and being invited here and there to promote that message, they will not give up on that message. Money becomes a driving factor.
As servants of God we should go out with a point without having beef with anyone. When Satan who had beef with Jesus tempted Him, Jesus stuck to having points only. Make your point and ignore the beef. Let God deal with the beef. Have a point. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
