Does God Need Security for His House and Leaders’ Bodyguards?

1 Chronicles 9:27 (NIV) – They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning.

The Bible tells us, there were guards assigned to guard the house of God, the Tabernacle. That is a good idea because the place had many valuables. Many items in the Tabernacle were made of gold, silver and bronze. Such a place would need guards.

The problem with having guards would be that God seemed to need human security. The Tabernacle had the very presence of God. Does this need guarding?

The Tabernacle was a place of worship. It was within the center of Israel camp. The Tabernacle was a very holy place, and the presence of God was there. Everyone approaching the Tabernacle had to be careful, because an irreverent move could bring instant death. Yet such a place needed human guards?

Leviticus 10:1-2 (NIV) – 1 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.

Nadab and Abihu went to the Tabernacle where they surely served. They were sons of Aaron the God chosen High Priest. The two sons were on regular duty. However, on this day, they brought fire that God had prohibited. God killed them instantly at the Tabernacle. The story spread throughout Israel and everyone feared. The Tabernacle was a dangerous place. Everyone knew that. Yet the place needed human guards?

Why would God need human guards to provide security at His house day and night? Wasn’t God able to take care of Himself and His things? How should we interpret the presence of day and night guards, having highly controlled keys to the stores at the Tabernacle?

Exodus 19:12 (NIV) – Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death.

When God came down to Mount Sinai to pronounce the Ten Commandments, the rules of engagement were very strict. A limit or barrier was to be constructed around the Mountain. No one was to cross that limit. If anyone crossed that limit, they would die instantly. The presence of God would kill them. 

The presence of this very same God was present at the Tabernacle, yet the place needed human guards? This God who placed limits on Mount Sinai and if anyone crossed would die. This God placed limits to the Tabernacle and yet needed human guards?

Clearly, God doesn’t need guards. God has acted in the past in a way that proves He doesn’t need guards. Therefore, why would human guards be present at the Tabernacle? What lessons do we learn?

God can secure the world and ensure nothing goes wrong, but He chooses to share the responsibility with human beings. He can cause plants to grow without human help, but He allows us to be farmers. It’s not because He can’t do it, but because He has chosen to work with us. God chose to work with human guards at the Tabernacle.

God can keep us healthy and prevent sicknesses. However, He chooses to allow us take preventive measures. Not because He can’t keep us healthy by Himself, but because He wants us to participate. He could guard the Tabernacle, but He allowed human participation.

Matthew 4:5-7 (NIV) – 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

God has power to rescue anyone and keep them from falling and injury. Jesus refused to put God to the test. Jesus taught that it is wrong to test God. You cannot leave golden valuables in order to see if God can guard them. That is trying to test if God can keep things safe. That is to put God to the test. 

Jesus refused to jump from the Temple top, because He did not want to put God to the test. Israelites refused to put God to the test by leaving the Tabernacle unguarded. Therefore they placed guards round the clock at the Tabernacle.

Your church is a house of God. It has expensive equipment for sound, video and even furniture. Should we leave it unguarded because it is the house of God? God wants to participate with you in keeping the church safe. Should you put God to test to see if He can guard the church? Do not put God to test! Guard your church round the clock!

Leaders, even church leaders are sometimes symbols of the entire organization. Criminal elements or terrorists can attack them to symbolically harm the entire organization. Should we have armed guards taking care of this type of leaders round the clock? God wants to participate with us in their security. We should not put God to test by putting them in harm’s way. Do not put the Lord your God to test!

What religious leaders should avoid is superfluous show of security as if mimicking political secular leaders. Finding pleasure and thrill in such gimmicks is juvenile and opposed to the Spirit of Christ. We should be humble and frugal in use of money given through great sacrifice by believers.

Christians and their leaders are willing to die in defense of their faith. If death is the only alternative to going against God’s will, a believer and even their leaders should prefer death. However, a leader dying because we carelessly handled their security is not dying in defense of faith. That is what leaders should be guarded against.

When worshippers face threats, we invite police to guard them as they worship. It is not because God cannot do it. It is because God wants us to participate together in that security. It is because we should not put God to test by exposing worshippers to danger. Do not put the Lord your God to test!

Do not be careless about the future of your children thinking that God will intervene. Do not be careless about your health thinking that faith is enough to fix it. God wants us to participate therefore we take preventative measures. We should not put God to test by being careless and hoping that He will fix things we carelessly refused to handle. 

We should participate with God in our day to day lives. He created us to participate with Him. Our part may be negligible but that is what He wants. It is not God’s will that we sit back and just have faith that everything will work out. He wants us to participate!

It is irreverent to put God to test. To do things that are dangerous hoping that God will stop it. This is the danger of performing miracles for the sake of testing and proving that God is with us. We should reverently trust God without the need to put Him to test. You test what you don’t have faith in and what you don’t trust. Do not test God when He has given you power to address the matter.

Daniel 12:1 (NIV) – “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book —will be delivered.

God promises that when a situation is overwhelming, and we can’t handle it, He will step in and fix it. At the time of great distress, Michael the great prince aka Jesus, will arise, to address what His people can’t handle. What is beyond human ability, God will gladly help us!

May God help us to participate with Him. May God forgive us for putting Him to test. May we never again put God to test. May we trust that at the right time, God will step in and help us when we are overwhelmed. In Jesus name, Amen!
