Learning Budgeting, Accountability, Responsibility, and Store Keeping 

1 Chronicles 9:28 (NIV) – Some of them were in charge of the articles used in the temple service; they counted them when they were brought in and when they were taken out.

1 Chronicles chapter nine subtly reveals how a huge project and organization was managed and run. Reading the Bible properly would train us on many basics of life that other people wrongly thinks it’s only found in secular learning settings. We should avoid selective reading of the Bible and instead do a wholistic study.

Our passage today tells us how record keeping was done at the stores. Whatever left the store was counted and recorded. Whatever was returned to the store was counted and recorded. This ensured that there was someone held responsible for damage and loss. This also ensured that a looming shortage was detected early, because records would reveal it.

A budget shows income and planned expenses. A budget is about what comes in and how and why it goes out. Count and record your income. Count and record your expenses. With that information you’ll make wise future decisions financially. With that information you’ll make a reliable budget. The biggest challenge in financial management is that we don’t track our expenses. The Temple processes teach us to track income and expenses. Keep an updated accurate record of your income and expenses, and you will be wiser financially!

Accountability means you are transparent to others and you can give acceptable reasons for your choices and decisions. Record keeping enhances accountability. Accurate records of all events and activities. Producing accurate reports with details that are verifiable, makes one accountable. From the temple we learn accountability.

Responsibility is taking blame and praise for whatever happens. Responsibility is being given authority to work on something whose entire process and end result you will be applauded or blamed for. Responsibility means you are in charge. Record keeping shows who is in charge of items when they left the stores and when they were returned.

Who is responsible for giving out? Who is responsible for breakage? Who is responsible for good care? Who is responsible for loss? All these are revealed by records. The process of accurate record keeping apportions responsibility and makes people responsible.

Store keeping is managing stores to ensure we have what we need and we know who took what and who returned or didn’t. This is what the Temple store keepers did. They kept accurate records. From the Temple process we learn store keeping basics.

Record keeping may include journaling. Recording our day to day life, experiences and feelings. Over time these can be used to understand ourselves and even write memoirs of our lives. Record keeping makes a difference in how we perceive our lives.

Daniel 7:10 (NIV) – “…The court was seated,

and the books were opened.”

Malachi 3:16 (NIV) – Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name.

Revelation 20:15 (NIV) – Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Heaven does record keeping of our words, actions, and thoughts. Judgment is based on these records. Those who accept salvation, get their records cleared by the blood of Jesus. Without Jesus, a sinner must face the records of their own lives.

Record should remind us to cling to Jesus. Record keeping should be easier in this time and age when technology has provided handy tools for record keeping. May record keeping be our way of life. May our records in heaven be cleaned by the blood of Jesus. Amen!
