Matthew 5:1-2
(1) Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, (2) and he began to teach them.
Opportunity is the perfect chance to do something and that chance may not last long. It has been said that opportunity knocks once. That means if you do not respond to that one knock, you may never have that opportunity again. We learn from Jesus that opportunity should never be wasted!
Opportunity comes unannounced and doesn’t last long. We have a very short time to think and decide what to do with the opportunity that is at hand. Any delay may be regretted forever. Don’t waste any opportunity!
Someone has correctly said that opportunity favors a prepared mind. Those who are ready in the event of an opportunity will make use of it when it comes. That means we must always be prepared or else, we will waste precious opportunities.
If you have decided to buy a car. If you know the type of car. If you have the money or a plan to raise the money, it means you are prepared. If suddenly an offer comes to get that same car quickly at a low price, you will seize the opportunity and benefit. The other person is one who needs a car but isn’t very sure about buying a car or buying a piece of land. That second person doesn’t know the type of car nor does he have a plan on how to raise the money. If this second person comes across a perfect car on offer at a cheaper price, they will miss it. They will waste the opportunity.
To avoid wasting an opportunity, be prepared for all that is critical to you. To avoid wasting opportunities, make up your mind on what you need. To avoid wasting opportunities have an idea of how you will go about taking advantage of the opportunity. Don’t waste any opportunity!
We waste opportunities when we do not have basic preparation that includes decisions on which direction to take. We waste opportunities when we delay deciding or acting. We delay until the opportunity is gone. We waste opportunities when we have excuses for delay and inaction. Excuses will cause us to waste not just this opportunity but even the next opportunity.
Our Bible passage today tells us that when Jesus saw the crowd, He acted immediately on the opportunity. Jesus immediately sat down and taught them. This was an opportunity because it would not always be there. Jesus did not waste the opportunity!
Jesus was prepared for this opportunity because He was clear that He came to this world to teach and preach. With that clarity, such an opportunity would not be wasted. Jesus was also prepared because He had something to teach, therefore when the opportunity came He took advantage. Jesus did not waste any opportunity!
What if Jesus had not made up His mind whether to be a preacher or not? He would have wasted that opportunity. What if Jesus had not prepared a sermon and lesson? That opportunity would have been wasted. Some basic preparation for what you are interested in will make you fit to take advantage of any and every opportunity. Jesus did not waste any opportunity!
Dear Jesus, help us not to waste any opportunities. Give us opportunities for employment, business, relationships, of sharing your message, etc., in Jesus’ name, Amen!
