Jude 1:7
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
Jude like all other Apostles who wrote letters to churches has a big concern that people have arisen from within the congregations whose aim is to mislead the church. The greatest danger then and now is that someone or some people from within the congregation will come up with slightly different teachings that seem superior and with revelation, but will in that manner mislead many people. Therefore Jude writes to the church urging them to be careful about such people.
Jude takes time to describe these wicked people and their wicked lifestyle. Jude tells the church that God saved people from Egypt and then later on the same God who saved them destroyed them, Jude 1:5. This means that a person can be good today but may become bad tomorrow. The fact that the person is within the congregation or leadership does not mean that he/she cannot miss the way and mislead others. God saved them because they were good, but God destroyed them because they ceased to be good and became evil. Jude cites another example of angels who were created perfect but became wicked, Jude 1:6. Then thirdly, Jude gives the example of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Jude tells us that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of two reasons. The first problem was sexual immorality. The second problem was perversion. Sexual immorality is having sex before marriage or outside marriage. For this very reason, Sodom and Gomorrah were punished eternally!
Perversion has to do with sexual activities that do not follow the natural order. Sexual activities that involve men and men, women and women, and even parts of the body that were not designed for sex. This is what was happening in Sodom and Gomorrah. For this very reason, they were punished eternally!
Genesis 19:4
But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house.
Genesis 19:5
And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”
Genesis 19:6
Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him,
Genesis 19:7
and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.
Genesis 19:8
Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.”
Angels who looked like men visited Lot in Sodom and Gomorrah. The men of Sodom demanded to have sex with them. They were asking for gay sex or homosexual sex. Lot goes and pleads with them to stop that wicked intention and instead take his virgin daughters. Lot refers to sex between men and men as wickedness. Lot pleads with them to stop that wickedness and take his daughters who are virgins so that they can have normal sex that is between men and women. Sex between people of the same gender is a perversion. For this very reason, Sodom and Gomorrah were eternally punished!
Those who champion the rights of gays, homosexuals, lesbians, etc., will argue that this part of the Bible is not correctly translated. They will argue that the wording has a problem. They will argue in any direction, with only one intention, to show that sexual perversion was not the problem in Sodom and Gomorrah. But the Bible plainly tells us that these two reasons caused the eternal punishment of these cities.
Sexual immorality had been normalized. All people, Genesis 19:4, could come together and without shame demand for sex with visitors. Parental guidance was no longer an issue. Sexual immorality was discussed in public and almost celebrated as a sport. Isn’t this where we are today? Arent the most interesting captivating talk about sexual immorality? Isn’t it what makes money for public broadcasters? Listen to Radio and at peek hour, isn’t it about sexual immorality? Arent we worse than Sodom and Gomorrah by now? For this very reason, others were eternally punished!
Aren’t our top songs praising sexual immorality? Aren’t our late-night juicy chats, chats that are sexually immoral? Aren’t the most interesting people those who openly make fun of sexual immorality? Aren’t our best videos and dances those that give credibility to sexual immorality? Aren’t relationships both open and clandestine all about sexual immorality? The majority of our relationships will cease in relevance if sexual immorality was eliminated. The biggest profit-making industry online is the pornography industry, isn’t that sexual immorality? Aren’t we as qualified as Sodom and Gomorrah for eternal punishment? For this very reason, others were eternally punished!
Sexual perversion has now received government backing around the world. Those who are sexually perverse are protected and their rights guaranteed. No one is allowed to condemn them but they can condemn others. Movies and books are quietly showing sexual perversions in order to normalize them. There is funding and support for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender, and the queer or undecided. Our sexual perversions are now official. As Christians, we believe everyone has a God-given right to life and existence including sinners of sexual perversion. We will guarantee their right to life and existence but we will not keep quiet as if their sexual orientation is normal, no, we will condemn it just as we condemn other sinners. This perversion destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, aren’t we as perverse as them too? For this very reason, others were eternally punished!
If you honestly examine yourself, you could be more qualified than Sodom and Gomorrah for eternal punishment. The reason why God has not eternally punished us is His graciousness that may run out anytime. As we are today, our world qualifies for eternal punishment for just these two reasons without including others that are ongoing. We thank God for His grace. May your grace help us overcome these two sins and many others. May your grace be sufficient for us, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
