for the times are evil.
Good News Translation
And so, keeping quiet in such evil times is the smart thing to do!
Contemporary English Version
Times are so evil that anyone with good sense will keep quiet.
Amplified Bible
Therefore, he who is prudent and has insight will keep silent at such a [corrupt and evil] time, for it is an evil time [when people will not listen to truth and will disregard those
of good character].
New Living Translation
So those who are smart keep their mouths shut, for it is an evil time.
The book of Amos chapter five tells us that Israel had become a wicked community. Israel was a community without justice or love for truth. Israel was now ruled by wicked conniving people.
God sends the prophet Amos to warn Israel that He will punish them. God through Amos describes the evils in Israel. God says that Israel is so dangerous for good people that it is safe to be quiet.
When all the people around you are wicked and unjust, you are wise if you keep quiet. Do not develop false courage and challenge wicked people who are in power, they will harm you, just keep quiet. God says Israel is so unjust to the extent that those who are smart keep their mouths shut.
It is not the silence of compromise. It is not the silence of surrendering to evil to reign. It is not the silence of fear. It is not the silence of those who can’t call sin by name. This is a silence of strategy. A silence that stays out of harm’s way while waiting for help from God. Anyone with good sense will keep quiet.
If you are cornered by the enemy and you are outnumbered, you stay in your hiding place. You don’t come out exposing yourself. You hide as you wait for your backup forces to join you. Until the reinforcement team arrives, just keep your mouth shut.
God will obliterate all the evil people who have made life unbearable for others. God may take a long but He will do it. God is aware you are suffering injustice. God has the plan to rescue you. Until when God acts to set you free, keep quiet, and do not provoke the enemy to come for you. Keep quiet for your immediate safety. The wise keep quiet!
If you are a leader and the people under you are quiet, it may not always be a sign of respect. It may be a sign of fear. It may be the silence that confirms that you are so evil to the extent that the wise under you must keep quiet. Those who are smart impress you by looking loyal and keeping their mouths shut for the days under you are evil.
If it is not safe to protest and you can remain doing the right thing in silence, we recommend that you keep your mouth shut. If your noise would only express your anger but change nothing and instead put you at risk, we recommend that you keep quiet. You do not challenge a deranged armed man, you may not come out alive, but you are safe shutting up and keeping off his path.
We die for our faith when we have the option to recant our faith or die. If it is not a matter of faith, you do not need to die. You are wise if you keep quiet.
Are you an orphan living with some tyrant who pretended to love your parents but now makes your life difficult? Do not despair, God is coming to rescue you, but until God arrives, keep your mouth shut. Keep your mouth shut and do not provoke them into a duel with you.
Are you under a dangerous government? A dangerous boss? Just keep quiet, God will come to your rescue. If in silence you do not let others suffer and you do not offend God and sin against Him, keep your mouth shut.
May God help us to keep quiet and therefore be safe. May God grant us the grace to know when to keep quiet and actually to do so, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
