God Knows The Members of Deep State

Obadiah 1:8
“In that day,” declares the LORD,
“will I not destroy the wise men of Edom,
those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?

Obadiah writes this prophecy against Edomites, the descendants of Esau. God accuses them of not helping Israelites when they were under attack. God accuses them of standing aloof yet they could help. God accuses them of cheering as Israelites suffered. God promises to punish them for this behavior.

God says He noticed that Edomites supported the enemies of Israel. God says He noticed that Edomites were so proud and felt extremely secure from any harm and danger. This brief prophecy from God is a promise by God to totally obliterate Edomites from the face of the earth. As we write today, they no longer exist anywhere on earth!

In our text today God promises to destroy the wise men of Edom. God promises to destroy those with understanding in Edom or the Mountains of Esau. Before destroying anyone else, God says He will begin with wise men and those with understanding. Not rulers and not everybody, but wise men and those with understanding.

Wisemen and those with understanding were the deep state of Edom. The deep state is a clique of people who are not directly responsible for running the government, but they directly influence the government secretly. When for example a spouse, relative or girlfriend or boyfriend of a legitimate ruler calls the shots secretly and with finality, s/he is the deep state.

The deep state is many times made of business people who secretly benefit from government business deals. They, therefore, wish to indirectly control government because that is a security for their businesses. They give big bribes to those in power and win their confidence. The legitimate rulers, therefore, allow these individuals to decide the direction of government.

The deep state is also made of security experts. The deep state is also made of political experts. The deep state is also made of wise men and men of understanding who secretly meet rulers and advice on the best way forward. The deep state is powerful and influential.

The deep state exists in government both local and national. The deep state exists in organizations, small and big. In some families, there are children who are in the deep state of the family and their word is final, because of parental love or the achievements they have made. The general name is the deep state but the concept exists in every type of leadership. There are unofficial people who knowingly or unknowingly influence the main legitimate leader. Whatever name such people are given, we call them the deep state.

Deep state may also be known as kitchen cabinet. Every government and leaders at all levels have officially recognized individuals who give advice and assist in decision making. However, it is a common fact that this same leaders consult outside the official circle of advisors. They casually consult friends, family and individuals who benefit from their leadership. Overtime, these consultations outside official circles becomes final and determine the decisions of the government or organization. Those being consulted outside the official circles are the deep state.

Some officials within the official circles may have an ear of the leader(s) more than others and can outside their official duties influence decisions, they are too the deep state. Deep state is the unofficial and many times secretive way of influencing decisions for personal benefits.

Members of the deep state could be enjoying favors from the leader(s). They could be getting guaranteed employment opportunities. They could be getting guaranteed business deals. They could be getting job security against their laziness or incompetence. They could be protecting tribal or racial interests. They could also be just enjoying the proximity to power. They influence decisions to ensure they are not displaced from getting the benefits.

Members of the deep state could be anyone who the leader(s) consistently gives a listening ear and implements their advice. Very educated leader(s) could be listening to uneducated people. Deep state could be anyone ranging from drivers, domestic workers, side chicks, old trusted friends, spouses, children, relatives, bosses, businesses people, etc. Absolutely anyone could be a member of the deep state.

The deep state is a natural occurrence out of the leaders need to find trusted people in the murky waters of leadership and office politics. The good and the bad of the deep state is in the kind of advice they give. This is why God calls out the deep state of Edomites. They gave bad advice and God promises to punish them because of that. God knows the members of the deep state!

God knew that the deep state of Edom were its wise men and men of understanding. God knows that the leaders of Edom acted at the behest of the deep state. God shows that He knows how secret governance works. God promises that He will first destroy the deep state of Edom before destroying anyone else. God knows the members of the deep state!

God knows that the deep state is responsible for the arrogance of Edom. God knows that the deep state made the decision to stand aloof when Israelites suffered. God knows that the deep state influenced the people and therefore all the people to behave in an ungodly way. God says they will therefore pay heavily. God says He will destroy the wise men and men of understanding in Edom. God will destroy the deep state. God knows the members of the deep state!

The public may never know the members of the deep state but God knows them. God knows how much responsibility they take for decisions made officially. God knows who influenced which decision. God says to the deep state, I am coming for you. God knows the members of the deep state!

For all the wrong decisions made in the government, schools, churches, businesses, community, etc., God knows the deep state is responsible. God says to the deep state, I know you are responsible and you will pay for it with your lives. God knows the members of the deep state!

Are you a victim of the deep state? Maybe you don’t even know that your troubles are because of deep state activities behind curtains, but God knows. God promises that He will deal with the deep state first before going for other guilty persons. God knows the members of the deep state!

God forgive us and save us from the sins of the deep state. If we will have positions of the deep state, may we influence the legitimate leaders for the good of everyone and the glory of your name. Save us from deep state machinations to harm us and others by deciding everything in their own selfish favors. As you did it in Edom against the deep state, do it again, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
