Exodus 4:1-2
(1) Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?”
(2) Then the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,” he replied.
God calls Moses who has spent forty years in Midian after running away from Egypt. God asks Moses to go back to Egypt and get Israelites out of Egypt. Moses is reluctant for many reasons. First, he is wanted in Egypt for murder. Secondly, he feels the task is just too much for him. Thirdly, Moses gives an excuse that he is a stammerer.
Our text today is at a point where God and Moses are having a conversation. Moses asks God a question we all love to think about in times of uncertainty. Moses asks God the “What if” question. You have sent me to take Israelites out of Egypt, what if they do not believe or listen? What if they say that God did not send me?
Moses was asking God to address his fears of meeting obstacles and problems in his path. What if while doing what you say I meet a problem? What if I meet a challenge greater than me? Dear God, what if I meet a problem?
What if after enrolling, the studies become too hard and I fail? What if I can’t raise all the required fees? What if she says no to me? What if I make a loss? What if it is an advanced stage of the disease? What if my enemies succeed in their plot against me? What if I sin again after re-baptism? Dear God, what if I meet a problem?
We all have endless “what if” questions. We all fear that something may go wrong and we won’t know what to do. We all wish to know how to address the negatives we fear before they happen. Dear God, what if I meet a problem?
God responded to Moses by asking him to use the shepherd’s rod he already had. To use the hand he already had. God was telling Moses in other words that, He had already provided a solution for the unforeseen problems.
God doesn’t accuse Moses of lacking faith. God doesn’t accuse Moses of seeing the glass as half empty. God does not urge Moses into empty optimism. God tells Moses that the solution to his problems is already provided and is at hand. Above all else, God assures Moses that He will be with him!
God tells Moses that He has an answer for the problem He fears will occur. God has an answer to all our fears. For every “what if” question, God has provided an answer. Above all else, He has provided Himself. Dear God, what if I meet a problem?
Matthew 28:20
… And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Hebrews 13:5
…, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
For every “what if” question that you have, God has a solution ready at hand already before it happens. God has also promised that He will never leave us. Therefore, in the worst-case scenario, we have God and nothing to worry about.
What if a storm comes? He was lying in the boat. What if we have no food to feed the masses? I will multiply the boy’s lunch. What if we have no taxes to pay? I will perform a miracle and there will be enough tax for us. What if Lazarus dies of this sickness? I will raise him from the dead? What if during this delay to go to my house, my daughter dies? I will raise her from the dead. Be assured in Jesus’ name, that God has an answer to every “what if” question, and above all else, He has promised to handle it with you. May it be so, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
