Imitate God And You Are Good To Go!

Ephesians 5:1
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children

Imitate God, therefore, in everything
you do, because you are his dear children.

Contemporary English Version
Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children.

Amplified Bible
Therefore become imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father];

To imitate is to do what someone else does. We imitate because we admire. We imitate because we do not have our own way of doing it. We imitate in order to be like the one we are imitating. Imitate God and you are good to go!

As Ephesians chapter four comes to an end, the Apostle is advising the church on how to live with one another. He also advises them on how to live a life of piety. He asks them to control their speech, Ephesians 4:29. He asks them not to grieve the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 4:30. He asks them to get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, etc., Ephesians 4:31. He asks them to forgive one another as Christ in God forgave them. That is how chapter four ends, then we get into the first verse of chapter five which is our focus today.

Before the Apostle shifts the discussion to addressing sexual immorality, Ephesians 5:3, he first concludes this talk on piety and relating to others. Our key text today is that conclusion. In that conclusion he says, that church members in seeking piety and good social interaction should imitate God. Do as God does. Be imitators of God. Imitate God and you are good to go!

In piety be as perfect as God is perfect, Matthew 5:48. Imitate God. Seek to be like God. Do not be like the Apostle or another human being, be like God. God is the best and we should strive to be like the best. In other words, the highest standard possible should be our standard. Imitate God and you are good to go!

When offended, forgive as God forgave you in Christ. You forgive like God. Just be like God. God gives us many second chances, give others many second chances like God. Imitate God and you are good to go!

When provoked just ignore them as an adult ignores a child because the child doesn’t know the risk they are placing themselves in. Do not come down and argue with lesser mortals. Play cool and let God act in His time. Just be like God. Imitate God and you are good to go!

God doesn’t brag about His achievements and successes. He mentions and moves on. When you excel, just be like God. Don’t make so much noise about it, just enough to pass the point. Imitate God and you are good to go!

God plans in detail. Plan like God. God is organized. Be as organized as God. God does things on time, do things in time like God. Imitate God and you are good to go!

God is able to work alone, but He allows others to work with Him. Be a team player like God. Work with others. Trust inferior people to help you. Give them a chance to prove themselves. Improve people’s lives as God does. Imitate God and you are good to go!

Lead like God. Do not go around feeling threatened. Be calm like God. Acting slow but sure like God. Sticking to your plans like God. When people under you make mistakes, treat them like God treated those who made mistakes. Some were harshly punished others were warned and many others are forgiven. Imitate God and you are good to go!

Apostle Paul summarises his message on piety and relationships among members, by admonishing them to be like God. Imitate your God as children imitate a parent. May God help us to imitate Him in everything, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
