John 8:20 (NIV) – He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
Jesus spoke the truth that should have seriously offended the Jewish leaders. In their anger they would have seized Jesus and killed Him or in the least thrown Him out of the temple. Yet they didn’t do that and the Bible explains why in our text today.
The Bible tells us that they couldn’t seize Him because His time had not yet come. They couldn’t get angry because His time had not yet come. They couldn’t harm Him or throw Him out because His time had not yet come.
God operates the universe with a divine timetable. If the time for something hasn’t come it will not happen. If it is not time to die, nothing will kill you, because it is not yet time.
If you want something and it is not yet time, you will not get it. Even if the most powerful forces on earth assist you. You will not get it because it is not yet time.
David was anointed king but it took many more years before he became king. He was anointed but it was not yet time. King Saul tried killing David but he didn’t succeed because it wasn’t time for David to die. David refused to kill king Saul because he knew time will come and he will die as per the divine timetable, and it happened. Things are not happening because it’s not yet time!
Your enemies are not getting punished? Your enemies seem to be doing better and better? In spite of their evil they thrive? God isn’t blind to their evil, it’s because it’s not yet time for God to destroy them. Stay put it’s not yet time!
Israelites suffered in Egypt because of two reasons. First it wasn’t time for them to become a nation they were too few. Secondly it wasn’t time for God to destroy Canaanites because they were still on grace period. Israelites suffered in slavery because it was not yet time to be set free. Canaanites continued their evil because it was not yet time for them to be punished.
Jeremiah 29:10 (NIV) – This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place.
God tells Israelites through Jeremiah that I will remove you from Babylon after seventy years. I have set seventy years for you in Babylon. Whatever happens before seventy expires you will remain in Babylon because it’s not yet time.
Galatians 4:4 (NIV) – But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
Jesus was not born during the time of Adam. Jesus wasn’t born during the time of Noah or Abraham. Jesus was not born during the time of Moses or other prophets. The reason is it was not yet time!
Prayer has been answered because it’s time. Prayer has not been answered because it is not yet time. Good people may suffer because it’s not yet time for their vindication. Bad people may thrive as if God favors them, because it’s not yet time for their punishment and destruction!
Isaiah 60:22 (NIV) – The least of you will become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; IN ITS TIME I will do this swiftly.”
Isaiah 60:22 (New Living Translation) – The smallest family will become a thousand people, and the tiniest group will become a mighty nation. AT THE RIGHT TIME, I, the LORD, will make it happen.”
Isaiah 60:22 (Amplified Bible ) – “The smallest one will become a thousand (a clan), And the least one a mighty nation. I, the LORD, will quicken it IN ITS [APPOINTED] TIME.”
Isaiah 60:22 (Good News Translation) – Even your smallest and humblest family Will become as great as a powerful nation. WHEN THE RIGHT TIME COMES, I will make this happen quickly. I am the LORD!”
God promises through prophet Isaiah that when the right time comes, He will always act. We must interpret our circumstances with God’s timing. It is happening because it’s time. It hasn’t happened because it’s not yet time!
God’s timing is better than our timing. We may feel inconvenienced but May He grant us patience to wait for His timing. In our anxieties and disappointment, May we be reminded that it’s not yet time, and May we find comfort and strength in that thought. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
