Minimize Distractions and Demands for Good Treatment In Ministry 

Luke 9:4 (NIV) – Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.

Jesus is instructing His disciples just before they go out to preach for several days. A keen study shows the philosophy behind the instructions. After He had told them to take nothing for the journey, He now tells them not to keep changing houses.

Jesus tells them that whatever house you enter, stay there to the end. Whatever. That means good house or bad house. Whatever house means the circumstances of the house shouldn’t bother the disciples. They should be so focused on preaching in that town that the state of the house doesn’t matter.

In other words, do not let the state of the house bother you. Just stay there to the end of your mission. Whatever house, stay there to the end!

Shifting from one house to another will easily be interpreted as you seeking self comfort. The focus is not you. Your comfort is not the priority. Do not move around and cause your actions to be misinterpreted. Whatever house you enter, its state doesn’t matter, stay there to the end of the mission!

Any ministry that seeks to make the evangelist comfortable at the expense of the work, is not of God. The work should be prioritized over the evangelist. The evangelist should focus on the work and the circumstances shouldn’t be his or her concern. Whatever house you enter, stay there to the end!

To be choosy about houses is not an evangelistic spirit. Whatever house you enter, stay there to the end. An evangelist should not be remembered for being choosy about food, house, clothing, etc. An evangelist should be remembered for the work they did.

If you have preferences that must be considered for you to minister effectively- quit this ministry. The Master is clear, whatever house you enter, your preferences don’t matter, stay there to the end of your mission.

Luke 9:5 (NIV) – If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

The only condition for leaving the house is if the people do not welcome you. Your stay and comfort is determined by your hosts and not you. If they treat you well, enjoy. If they treat you averagely or below average, persevere, stay there to the end. If they welcome you, the circumstances don’t matter, stay there to the end of the mission. If they do not welcome you, leave without pleading to stay.

The onus is on your hosts on how you are treated. It’s not your call to dictate what you want and what you do not want – you either stay or leave. The ministry should have minimum distractions. As much as it depends on you, focus on the work and leave when done. God will hold accountable those who host you on how they treat you, therefore do not let it bother you. Do not be distracted, focus on your mission!

God will punish those who can afford to feed you well but they do not. God will punish those who can reimburse your transport properly but they give you less. God will punish those who could give you comfortable facilities but they choose cheap. As a minister do not let it bother you, whatever house you enter, stay there, stay focused on the mission, do not murmur or complain or make demands, at the end of the mission you leave. The mission is too important to be distracted by temporary host issues. Only leave if you are not welcome.

Luke 9:4-5 (NIV) – 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

Once the work is done, please leave. Once the work is done, go home. Once the work is done, do not delay an extra hour or day. That extra hour or day always ruins the ministry. That extra hour or day is when you are tempted to pursue your own interests. The last thing that will be remembered about you is the personal pursuits of the extra hour or day. Once the work is done, leave immediately.

If the house you entered was wealthy and comfortable, you will be tempted to stay longer, don’t. The departure alarm is when work is done. Don’t create extra assignments so that you can stay longer, leave. You will have a good ministry!

As we serve God, He will take care of our comfort. God will repay us for the discomfort we experience. We should not make the ministry to be about us, we should remain focused on delivery only. Once done we leave immediately. May God help us to be the ministers He wants, in Jesus name, Amen!
