1 Kings 8:59 – And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need,
A salary is paid once in two weeks in certain jurisdictions, and once in a month in other jurisdictions. Once you are paid, it is your responsibility to ensure it is sufficient until the next pay. How you manage it daily is your responsibility.
Casual workers are paid daily according to the work done. If they don’t work they don’t get paid. If they are sick and don’t show up for work, they hardly get paid, unless the employer is extra kind.
In all these payment formats, one is paid according to their work and not according to their needs. The salary is predetermined and even when your needs increase or decrease the salary remains the same. The wages of a casual laborer remains the same. Their needs don’t matter!
King Solomon in his prayer during the dedication of the temple reveals that God doesn’t provide for us like a salary of casual laborer’s wages. God doesn’t predetermine an amount that He gives us. God looks at our needs and helps us according to our needs.
God doesn’t pay us. We don’t deserve any pay from God. Our work is poorly done and ideally we should be fired. If God was to pay us according to our work, we would be fired. The little we do would attract a small negligible pay. Therefore, when God provides for us, it’s an act of grace, something we don’t deserve.
God provides for us what we need and not a similar amount regularly. God doesn’t ask us to find ways to ensure it is sufficient. He makes sure it is sufficient. That is why the Bible says that He provides according to our daily needs!
King Solomon prays to God asking Him to uphold the cause of Israel according to their daily needs. After Solomon has prayed a long prayer with specific requests, it occurs to him that needs of Israel will keep varying. Therefore, he ends the prayer by asking God to do what He always does. Provide for them according to their daily needs!
Exodus 16:17 – The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little.
Exodus 16:18 – And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
When God gave manna to Israelites He gave it daily. God would have resorted to give weekly or monthly, but He gave daily. The manna was to be collected according to each one’s needs. It is your personal needs that determined how much you collected. God provided for them daily according to their needs!
Lamentations 3:22 – Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
Lamentations 3:23 – They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
As Jeremiah laments the suffering of Israel during the Babylonian raid that led to seventy years captivity, it occurs to him that God has never failed any single day. Israelites offended God daily, but daily God was gracious to them. Israelites would have been destroyed long ago, but because of God’s daily mercies, they have not been destroyed in their sins. God provides according to their daily needs!
Matthew 6:11 – Give us today our daily bread.
Jesus taught us how to pray. Part of the prayer is about our needs exemplified by bread. Jesus taught us to pray for daily bread. We don’t pray for weekly or monthly bread. Jesus taught us that God provides according to our daily needs!
Daily God forgives us. Daily God ensures we have life and what we need. God looks at what we need and provides according to our changing needs. We praise God for providing according to our daily needs!
Shouldn’t we also provide for each other according to our daily needs? I may need more love today than yesterday. She may need greater forgiveness today than last time. He may need more time today than last time. The needs of people around us change daily. Like God let us give them a daily treat according to their needs!
Our workers and colleagues at work have daily changing needs. Our children have daily changing needs. Our spouses have daily changing needs. Our neighbors, relatives and friends have daily changing needs. The needs may be social, emotional, academic, financial, spiritual, etc. May God enable us to provide for them according to their daily needs!
Thank you God for your provisions according to my daily needs. I know whatever comes today however big or small is sorted. May I also provide daily for those around me, and may it be according to their needs. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
