Deuteronomy 7:17
You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out? ”
Deuteronomy 7:18
But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.
Deuteronomy 7:19
You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.
Israelites were preparing to fight Canaanites and take over the Promised Land. God tells them through Moses that they should not be afraid. When they face any threat to their lives or livelihood they should not be afraid. When the enemy they are dealing with is stronger and totally threatening, they should not be afraid. When they look at their opponents and wonder how they will overcome, God gave them a solution. In our text today, God tells them to remember what the LORD did!
When a situation is overwhelming. When a threat is real. When the enemy is powerful. When defeat is apparent. When you are almost conceding defeat. When it seems the best thing is to let go…God says, do not be afraid, just remember what the LORD did!
Remember what God did to Pharaoh and the Egyptians. Remember the ten plagues in Egypt. Remember the Red Sea opening up to let you cross. Remember Egyptians trying to cross and drowning. Remember what the LORD did!
God tells them through Moses that if anyone threatens you, just remember what the LORD did. If anyone makes a move to harm you, just remember what the LORD did. Do not allow fear to rule your life. Remember what the LORD did!
The solution to fear is to remember what the LORD did. Fear is because we forget. To address fear, go over again what God did in the past. If the enemy surrounds you, remember God saved you in Egypt when you lived with and under the enemy. If the enemy pursues you, remember the Egyptian Army pursued you with the sole intent to destroy you, remember God crushed them, and wiped them from the face of the earth. What are you afraid of? Remember what the LORD did!
God tells them that He is the same God. God will still do what He did in the past. If He did it when Egyptians threatened you, He can do it again when others threaten you. God who did it in the past, will do it again. To address fear and giving up, just remember what God did!
Are you broke? It’s not the first time you are broke. When were you last broke? Remember what God did. Are you rejected? It’s not the first time you are being rejected. When were you last rejected? Remember what God did. Have you failed? It’s not the first time you are failing. When did you last fail? Remember what God did. Are you in huge trouble? It’s not the first time you are in huge trouble. When were you last in huge trouble? Remember what God did. The same thing God did for you in the past, He is the same God and He will save you the same way. Do not be afraid. Remember what the LORD did!
It’s not the first time you are sick. It’s not the first time you are falsely accused. It’s not the first time you are betrayed. It’s not the first time you have almost no one on your side. It’s not the first time you are alone with God. It’s not the first time it seems God is delaying. It’s not the first time it seems God hasn’t answered prayers. It’s not the first time your faith is challenged. If you take a hard look at our past, God has always come through when you almost gave up. God will do the same thing. Use your experience. Do not be afraid, remember what God did!
What are we dealing with today? Is it overwhelming? Does it seem too much? Do not be afraid, let us not be afraid, may God save us from fear, may He remind us what He has done for us in the past, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
