1 Corinthians 1:26
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
What Apostle Paul is telling us in this section of the Bible is that the gospel is more than we have known it to be. The gospel is not just a story. The gospel is not just an academic pursuit for Bible students. The gospel is not just like any faith that people believe in. Paul tells us that the gospel is so powerful that whoever accepts it gets transformed in totality. The gospel improves your ratings in society!
1 Corinthians 1:18 onwards tells us that the gospel or the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who believe it, it is the power of God. Power to effect change. Power to have its way. Power to transform lives. The power that can’t be stopped, must have its way. The gospel is the power of believers. Believers who accept the gospel also accept power into their lives. For unbelievers it is foolishness. For believers, it is a transforming power. The gospel improves your ratings in society!
Throughout 1 Corinthians 1:19-25, the Bible tells us that only believers appreciate the power in the gospel. Yet it is real power. The power has made a huge difference in the lives of the believers. The gospel improves your ratings in society!
Your ratings are how you compare to others. Your health rating is how your health is in relation to that of others. Your wealth rating is how much wealth you have in relation to the wealth that others in the same society have. We all strive to have a higher real rating. Officially and informally we are all rated and we rate ourselves in society. We all wish to have higher ratings. The gospel improves your ratings in society!
The Bible in our key text today tells us that believers have totally changed. What they were before conversion and what they are now is no longer the same. Because of the gospel and conversion, believers who were previously low rated are now highly rated. The gospel improves your ratings in society!
1 Corinthians 1:26
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
Before the gospel, we were not wise. Before the gospel, we were not intelligent. Before the gospel, we were the worst academically. Before the gospel, we had no influence. Before the gospel, no one respected us to carefully listen to our opinion. Before the gospel we were low-class citizens since we were not of noble birth, meaning we were doomed to perish as ordinary hopeless people. The gospel improves your ratings in society!
We are what we are because the gospel has changed our lives. Paul tells the Corinthian believers to think about what they were before salvation. Think and then in reverence appreciate the power of the gospel. Think about it and acknowledge that the gospel has improved your rating in society!
Think of where you would be if you had not accepted the gospel. Think of what the power of the gospel has done to you. If it wasn’t for the gospel would you be one of the corrupt civil servants? If it wasn’t for the gospel wouldn’t you be in a polygamous marriage living in tension and hate? How would your marriage be, if it wasn’t for the gospel? How would your children grow up, if it wasn’t the gospel? If it wasn’t the gospel would you be deep in drugs peddling and abusing them? If it wasn’t for the gospel would you have ever thought of going back to school? If it wasn’t the gospel would your singing gift or preaching and teaching gift ever be known? Hasn’t the gospel given you people to interact with? Hasn’t the gospel enabled you to access respectable persons in society? The gospel improves your ratings in society!
1 Corinthians 1:27-31 tells us that since we are what we are because of the gospel, we should not boast. If we must boast, let us boast in the Lord, 1 Corinthians 1:31. We are everything that we are not by our efforts but by God’s favor on us. We have nothing to boast about, the gospel has improved our ratings. The gospel improves your ratings in society!
Thank you, God, for the power of the gospel that has improved my ratings. If it wasn’t for the gospel, I would be a hopeless nobody. May I experience more and more of the gospel power as my ratings consequently adjust, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
