The Simple Humble Will Do Great and Mighty Things 

Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) – Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The prophet Zechariah narrates about the coming of a better King for Zion or Israel. Other kings failed God’s people. Other kings oppressed God’s people. Other kings misled people to sin against God and consequently suffer in captivity. Other kings were unjust and never made people’s lives better. Throughout history it was clear that there is need for a better king.

Prophet Zechariah presents the best king that Israel will have. This king will be different from the previous kings and even from the neighboring kings. This king will appear in simplicity and humility. This king is known for righteousness and victory. In humility, He is riding on a donkey, as opposed to magnificent chariots escorted by armies. He is alone on a poor man’s means of transport. He is riding on a donkey.

Zechariah 9:9 (Message Bible) – “Shout and cheer, Daughter Zion! Raise the roof, Daughter Jerusalem! Your king is coming! a good king who makes all things right, a humble king riding a donkey, a mere colt of a donkey.

The hallmark of this king is simplicity and humility. Yet this same king is righteous and victorious. He succeeds where all other kings failed. He may be riding a mere colt of a donkey, but He makes all things, not somethings, but all things right. The best king ever yet appearing in simplicity and humility.

This was a prophecy about Jesus. He is the best king we will ever have. He did appear riding a donkey. He is the one who makes all things right. Jesus is extremely powerful. He is the Omnipotent God. He is the Omniscient God. He is the Omnipresent God, yet He appears in simplicity and humility.

Matthew 21:7-8 (NIV) – 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

Jesus does not appear in pomp and color, yet He rules in righteousness and victory. In the simplicity and humility of Jesus you may think He will be intimidated by enemies of Israel. Far from it, this simple and humble king, destroys all enemies of Israel. Simple and humble but doing great things!

Zechariah 9:10-11 (NIV) – 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.

The simple and humble king will end all wars. He will expand His territory. He will free prisoners. He will restore Israel. He will remove all threats against God’s people. There will be life without threats. Indeed the simple humble king will do great and mighty things.

Zechariah 9:12 (NIV) – Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

The simple and humble king will deliver what was hoped for. Prisoners of hope will see their hopes fulfilled. Their dreams will come true. A king who makes your dreams come true is a great king. Many dreams remain as dreams. Yet this king will release prisoners of hope to see their hopes fulfilled.

The simple and humble king will restore what was lost. We have lost a lot over time. We have lost people. We have lost time. We have lost opportunities. We have lost valuable things. Some of what we lost was taken from us violently. This King will restore twice as much. The simple and humble King will be the greatest ever!

Zechariah 9:16-17 (NIV) – 16 The LORD their God will save his people on that day as a shepherd saves his flock.They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown. 17 How attractive and beautiful they will be! Grain will make the young men thrive, and new wine the young women.

The simple and humble king will save His people. Everyone will be safe under this king. Then they will also be prosperous and healthy. Young men and young women will thrive. Foods they eat will make them healthy. All these because of a simple and humble king who does great things!

We too should be simple and humble leaders. God will cause simple and humble leaders to thrive and excel. We should abandon worldly styles of leadership that are made of arrogance and pride. In simplicity and humility, God will do great things through us!

Jesus is that simple and humble king. You can invite Him in your life. He will do great and mighty things for you. He will remove all threats from your life. He will restore twice what you lost. He will save you and you will thrive and prosper. Invite Jesus into your life. He is the simple and humble king who does great and mighty things!

Dear God, I invite you in my life to be the king of my life. Take over my life. Rule my life. Reign supreme and may your will be done in my life. With you in me, great and mighty things will happen. Help me to be simple and humble like you, yet achieving great and mighty things. In Jesus name, Amen!
