Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Love can be demonstrated in many ways but which is the best way? Gary Chapman has given us five languages of love.
1. Words of affirmation
2. Acts of service
3. Receiving gifts
4. Quality time
5. Physical touch
These five languages are five different ways in which different people appreciate love. We do not see love from the same perspective. What one values as an expression of love may not be what another one values. Is there a universal language of love?
John 13:34
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
Love is a command from God. Love is not an option we choose. We must love. Failure to love is defying orders from God Himself. Therefore I love my spouse, children, relatives, friends, church members, and strangers because I have been ordered to do so by Christ Himself. I can’t help but love.
Matthew 5:44
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Those who hate me, I still love, because I have been ordered to love even my enemies. Love comes as a command and not a request. I don’t just love by mouth or empty words. I have to love genuinely because the one who gave the orders can read the heart if I am genuine or faking it.
When love matters are heightened on valentines day, we keep loving because we are not limited to Valentine’s day. We love so well that those we love do not need any evidence on valentines day that we love them. We overwhelm them throughout the year.
Our text today gives us a hint, that if we are in love and we should be since it’s a divine command, we should bear with one another and forgive one another. This is the best demonstration of love!
Gary Chapman’s five languages of love mean that everyone may perceive love differently but no one will fail to understand forgiveness. Forgiveness is the best demonstration of love. To forgive a person who has wronged you is the best demonstration of love.
Luke 23:34
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
At the cross, Jesus forgave those who had tortured Him. Jesus pronounced forgiveness while He was still in pain. Many of us would only forgive many years after the pain has subsided. Jesus taught us to forgive while we are still hurting. It is only true love that forgives. This is the best demonstration of love!
Psalms 130:3-4
(3) If you, LORD, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
(4) But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
God knows our sins but He has not treated us as we deserve. God bears with us. If someone can bear with you, that person loves you. God didn’t kill Adam and Eve on the spot. God’s people made so many mistakes but God didn’t kill them on the spot. God demonstrates His love by forgiving us. We should demonstrate our love by forgiving others. This is the best demonstration of love!
Those who are unmarried, choose carefully what you want to bear with all the days of your life. Those who are married, if your life is not threatened, just bear with one another. Forgive each other. This is the best demonstration of love!
Dear God, help us to demonstrate love as You did to us. Help us to bear with one another, and to forgive one another, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
