2 Kings 4:43-44
(43) “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.
But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and have some left over. ’” (44) Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD.
There was a famine in Gilgal and the surrounding region, 2 Kings 4:38. Elisha came to this region in order to meet the company of prophets. He asked them to prepare food. One of the prophets went to the fields and brought herbs, unfortunately, one of the plants was poisonous. Elisha had to perform a miracle to save everyone from dying and also make the only food available safe for consumption, 2 Kings 4:40-41.
Elisha and his company of prophets continued their business amidst the food shortage. Luckily someone came with a donation of twenty loaves of bread for the company of prophets, 2 Kings 4:42. We thank God that even when there is famine, we still have generous people. May God make us the generous people who help others even when everyone is in need.
Elisha received the gift of twenty loaves and asked that it be served immediately to everyone. Elisha’s servant responded to Elisha by telling him that twenty loaves are very few for a hundred men who were in this school of prophets, 2 Kings 4:43. But Elisha told him to serve it anyway since God has promised that they will eat and have enough.
When you are facing a shortage, move on by faith. Take a step of faith. start with the little. Move on anyway. Do not wait to have everything. Those who start their studies with the little fee they have are more likely to graduate soon than those who wait at home until they have all the money. Those who start any project in a small way, are more likely to go very far than those who are procrastinating hoping for a conducive environment. I challenge you in Jesus’ name, to start anyway.
Starting anyway doesn’t mean going in without a plan. You must have a plan and then pray for God’s blessings on that plan. Careless and plan-less is not faith but mediocrity. Have a plan and have faith then move on. The plan must be realistic and the faith must be solid. God will bless what you have and where you are, then unprecedented progress will follow.
When twenty loaves that were not sufficient for a hundred men were served by faith, they ate and there were some leftovers, 2 Kings 4:44. What? Yes, leftovers. Initially, it was not enough, but when God’s name was invoked, what was too little became sufficient. When Elisha claimed God’s promise, 2 Kings 4:43, that was a sufficient prayer to God. They ate and there were leftovers!
I wish to observe that when God gives, He doesn’t give exact, He gives excess and there are always leftovers. When God gives, He never gives less, He gives more than we need and what follows is that there will be leftovers. This is the much He always gives!
Mark 8:7-9
(7) They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. (8) The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. (9) About four thousand were present…
Luke 9:14-17
(14) (About five thousand men were there.)
But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” (15) The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. (16) Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. (17) They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
When Jesus fed the four thousand men plus many others, there were leftovers. When Jesus fed the five thousand men plus many others, there were leftovers. It begins with a shortage then God steps in and what we have is not the exact food needed but excess. He always gives excess. This is the much He always gives!
What shortage are you facing? In the event of any shortage, turn to Jesus and He will eventually give you an excess. Do you have a shortage of happiness? A shortage of love? A shortage of money? A shortage of good health? A shortage of good school grades? Turn to Jesus and give Him the little you have, and Jesus will do what He always does, He will give you an excess. This is the much He always gives!
Ephesians 3:20
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
May God step into your life and address your needs. May this God who gives excess, grant you more than you need until you collect leftovers, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
