Ezekiel 8:12 (NIV) – He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.’”
Ezekiel 8:17 (NIV) – He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose!
Something that is trivial is something that isnt very important and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Is what believers are doing in darkness a trivial matter? Should it be ignored as a small issue? Is it trivial?
God is not happy when anybody commits sin, including unbelievers. He feels worse than that when the people committing the sins are believers who should know better. The worst of it is when the active sinners offending God are religious leaders that God chose to guide His people. To add insult to injury, the worst of sins are committed in the place of worshipping God. Is this a trivial matter?
God shows Ezekiel how Israelites worship idols secretly in the dark. God shows Ezekiel how Israelites abuse the temple by going In during dark hours and then doing things that offends God. Therefore God asks, is this a trivial matter?
They commit sin in the temple where no one will least expect. But God says, I am watching. They commit sin in darkness where other human beings don’t see, but God says I am watching. They worship idols at night, then day time they pretend to believe in God. Is this a trivial matter?
Do we also forget that God sees in darkness? Do we also forget that what we do May be hidden from everyone but not God? Do we think our offenses against God are trivial matters?
When we are active believers by day, yet in secret we abuse drugs, use alcoholic beverages and live a life no different from unbelievers. Does God see? Does God know? Is it a trivial matter?
When we are tribalistic and racist while serving God. When we hide the racism and tribalism from people and pretend that it is God’s guidance. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
When we preach love and forgiveness by day but are violent and unforgiving in our intimate relationships. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
When we are church leaders on the one hand, but brutal to our employees, domestic workers, colleagues and even family members. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
When we project a passion for God and His church, but on the other hand come out as top fans and experts of secular music, dancing, dressing, eating, etc. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
When we have infighting in church. People living in fear in church because of you and your ruthless dealings with imaginary enemies. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
When we believe in God, but also visit witches whose new names are prayer experts. We take unresolved cases to them. We take prolonged illness to them. Yet we claim to believe in an all powerful God. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
The sexual immorality that is well concealed. Taking place in secret by church people. The secret communication. The secret meetings. The winking and flirting even in public. Hidden in plain sight. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
When we make money illegally. When we are corrupt. When we steal. When we short change others. When we rise by betraying others and lying about them. Does God see? Does He know? Is it a trivial matter?
Is it possible we have trivialized important things? God tells Ezekiel that Israelites will greatly suffer for sins they commit in darkness and consider them trivial. If you think it is trivial, God doesn’t think it’s trivial.
A trivial matter will not be preached against. A trivial matter will not be taken seriously. A trivial matter will not be repented. Unrepented matters will never be forgiven. Sins not forgiven will drive us to hell. It all started by thinking it’s trivial. Is it trivial?
God tells Ezekiel that what people trivialize will end up destroying them. What have you trivialized? Lateness to church? Is it trivial to you? Erratic return of tithes and offerings? Is it trivial to you? Breaking the Sabbath because of work and exams? Is it trivial to you? Breaking hearts, hurting people without care, both close family and others? Is it trivial to you? God says that what we treat as trivial, He takes very seriously. Is it trivial if God takes it seriously?
Dear God forgive us for trivializing what you take seriously. Refocus our minds to be once again sensitive to sin. Help us to live right in light and in darkness. May we never trivialize what you take seriously. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
