Why Are You So Afraid?

Matthew 8:26 (NIV) – He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

Before calming the storm, Jesus asks His disciples, why are you so afraid? Jesus is wondering why they are afraid. Jesus didn’t expect them to be afraid. Jesus looks at the raging storm and then looks at His fear stricken disciples, then He asks, why are you so afraid? It’s like He is telling them that this is not worth fearing. Why are you so afraid?

Matthew 8:23 (NIV) – Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.

Luke 8:22 (NIV) – One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out.

The story begins by telling us that it is Jesus who initiated the trip that ended up in a stormy lake. Matthew narrative tells us that Jesus led the way into the boat. Luke narrative tells us that it is Jesus who suggested that they cross over by getting into the boat. The whole trip that ended them into a stormy life threatening lake was initiated and led by Jesus. 

Jesus therefore asks them why they are afraid. I started this trip that has turned stormy. Why are you so afraid? We are here because I brought you here. Why are you so afraid? When I asked you that we cross over the lake, you think I didn’t know we will meet a storm? If you know that I brought you here and I knew there will be a storm, then, why are you so afraid?

If I am leading you in this trip, why are you so afraid? If you followed me this far, why are you so afraid? Are you doubting my power to save? Are you questioning my intentions? Why are you so afraid?

A song by Mary Mary tells us God bring us this far to leave us here. We have come a long way led by God, he can’t abandon us at this point!

Can’t Give Up Now – Mary Mary

And there will be battles that I will have to fight
But victory or defeat, it’s up to me to decide

Never said there wouldn’t be trials

Never said that everything would go the way I want it to go

Why are you so afraid if it is God who has brought you this far? Do you fear that He will abandon you? God doesn’t abandon people. Why are you so afraid?

Matthew 8:24 (NIV) – Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

If Jesus is in the same boat with you, why are you so afraid? If Jesus is sleeping unbothered by the storm, why are you so afraid? Looking at Jesus sleeping in a storm that should have woken Him up instantly, should assure us that we are safe. Why are you so afraid?

God brought you to school and you are facing challenges? Why are you so afraid? God gave you this job and it is threatened. Why are you so afraid? God knew all these will happen and He brought you to this point. He doesn’t make mistakes therefore you are here according to the divine plan. Why are you so afraid?

If you prayed before starting, why are you so afraid? If you know God has good plans for you, why are you so afraid? Is your situation unknown to God? Is God unable to help you? If you know God is in control, why are you so afraid?

Matthew 8:26 (NIV) – He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) – And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

O ye of little faith, why are you so afraid? Fear is lack of faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Why are you so afraid?

May God guide us. May we realize that He brought us this far and Be won’t abandon us. May we have more faith and have less and less to no fear. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
