Matthew 8:13 (NIV) – Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.
This same story is told in Luke chapter seven. The difference is that in Luke chapter seven, the Centurion has sent friends to plead with Jesus to come heal the servant. In the Matthew narrative, it is the Centurion who meets Jesus and makes the request directly. The basics of both narratives are the same, a centurion had a sick servant and he requested Jesus for healing and Jesus healed him. Both narratives confirm that the centurion demonstrated great faith by appealing to the authority of Jesus. The Bible is not a dictation but an expression of God’s word as written by human beings using their limitations. Matthew and Luke wrote the story at different times from different sources. The differences are welcome and they do not affect the message God intended to communicate.
The Centurion, a Roman high ranking soldier, asked Jesus for help. He had a sick servant. A servant he loved. Jesus was willing to go to his house and heal the servant.
The Centurion requested Jesus not to go to his house. The Centurion felt that he wasn’t qualified to host Jesus. The Centurion requested Jesus to use His authority to heal the servant.
The Centurion told Jesus that as a man of authority, he could order his soldiers to do whatever he wanted. Therefore, the Centurion asked Jesus to use His authority and order recovery. He believed Jesus had authority that could influence recovery of his servant.
Jesus was impressed by that faith. The Centurion had faith that Jesus had authority over sickness. The Centurion had faith that if Jesus gives an order, it would take effect at home and the servant would get well on the instant.
Jesus praised that kind of faith. This is the faith Jesus expects from us. Jesus expects us to believe that He has authority over everything even the unimaginable. Jesus expects us to have faith that nothing is impossible with Him!
If we believe that Jesus can do anything it helps us to be prayerful and have a relationship with Him. When our prayers are not answered, it is not because God can’t do it, but because it is His will that it doesn’t happen so for now. That way it becomes easy to know the will of God and wait on God.
Jesus finally tells the Centurion that let it be done as you believe. Let what you believe happen. Let your thoughts about this situation translate into reality. Let it be done as you believe!
If you prayed to Jesus today and He responded this way, let it be done as you believe, will your prayers be answered as you desire? Do you really believe that God can do it? Are you sure if God approves it, it will happen? Are you praying with faith or with doubt? May God translate your thoughts about this prayer item into reality. Let it be done as you believe!
Are you praying for something you think it’s too late to do anything about? Would it be safe therefore if Jesus said, let it be done as you believe? Are you praying for a patient to recover and you also think it’s just a matter of time before they die? What if after prayer Jesus says, let it be done as you believe? Are you praying for success but you also know the answers you gave or what you did gives you no chance, and you are just praying for the sake of it? What if Jesus responds and tells you, let it be done as you believe?
You believe your child can’t change or your spouse can’t change. You have seen many others in a similar situation who haven’t changed. You have tried everything and they haven’t changed. Yet nothing is impossible with God. You go to God in routine prayer but doubting if this person or this situation can change. What if God responds by telling you, let it be done as you believe?
Mark 9:21-24 (NIV) – 21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” 23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
The boy’s father knew that if things were to happen as he believed, his own son would not recover. The boy had the problem since childhood. They had tried many things and it was becoming difficult to believe that the situation could change. The disciples had tried to cast out the demon, while Jesus was at the Mount of Transfiguration, and they failed. At this point the father was losing faith. If Jesus says let it be done as you believe, they boy would never recover! The father therefore exclaimed that, I believe but help me overcome my unbelief! Don’t do it as I believe because my faith is shaky!
Don’t do it as I believe because my faith is shaky. Kindly address my shaky faith as you heal my son. Could it be that you and me also have a shaky faith? Is it possible that we are not comfortable if Jesus said, let it be done as you believe? May God address our shaky faith as He answers our prayers today, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
