You Can’t Be Indifferent Fight For This

Jude 1:3
Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and URGE YOU TO CONTEND for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.

New Living Translation
Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, URGING YOU TO DEFEND the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people.

Amplified Bible
Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I was compelled to write to you [urgently] APPEALING THAT YOU FIGHT strenuously for [the defense of] the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints [the faith that is the sum of Christian belief that was given verbally to believers].

Good News Translation
My dear friends, I was doing my best to write to you about the salvation we share in common, when I felt the need of writing at once TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO FIGHT on for the faith which once and for all God has given to his people.

Jude writes this letter to all Christians everywhere at all times. It’s a general letter to whom it may concern. He believed these issues were common to all believers so he wrote to no specific church but to everyone including us.

In this initial part of the letter, he says that he wanted to write about salvation. When he sat down to write this letter, he was going to write about the salvation that we share. But as he set off to write, something happened that changed the content of the letter. He doesn’t tell us what happened or what changed his mind. He tells us the new topic is now urgent.

The new urgent content of his letter may be the reason why it is brief so that it could go out quickly. He tells us he changed the topic and wrote to us about a much more urgent matter. Since we believe that all scripture is inspired, we believe that this change of topic was inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The new point he writes to us about is that we must contend for our faith. We must defend our faith. We must fight for our faith. You cannot afford to be indifferent you must fight for your faith!

Apostle Jude could have noticed that our faith was being challenged yet we chose to be indifferent. So he writes to say, do not be indifferent, actively defend your faith. Do not be silent as your faith is challenged and thrashed, respond and make an active defense. You can’t be indifferent, please fight for your faith!

Jude 1:4
For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

There are believers among us who are teaching corrupt teachings. There are preachers and teachers among us who are teaching strange content that is not consistent with our faith. They come as informed individuals. They come as people having the present truth. They come as people having a better understanding of the prophecies. But they are destroying our faith and misleading believers. Do not allow this to continue. You cannot be indifferent, please fight in defense of your faith!

You fight by not allowing them to teach falsehood. Because when they teach they mislead others. Do not give them a platform to mislead those young in faith. Defend your faith!

You fight by pointing out to the church the falsehood they are teaching. Point out clearly that such teachings contradict scripture. Show the church where they are wrong. Defend your faith!

You fight by calling them and warning them before all leaders and the whole church. Warn them publicly not to continue with such teachings. Tell them openly that such teachings have no place in our midst. Fight for your faith!

Fight for your faith by removing their names from the fellowship of believers if they persist. If they can’t take warning and advice to stop falsehood, take further action and disfellowship them. Actively defend your faith. Many of these people are like pests that suck the blood of the church but cannot stand on their own. They prefer to attack and frustrate the church from within. They cannot survive outside the church and get their own members out there. Do not allow these parasites. Defend your faith!

Speak about them as a warning to others. Preach about them to save others from following their falsehoods. Warn everyone about them. Let everyone know that these people are our opponents. Let everyone know the teachings they are peddling around and that they should avoid entertaining it. Contend for your faith!

Defend your faith by protecting young people. Young people at teenage and post-teenage, college, and university levels are at risk. They easily get excited by anything that seems new. They want to be the guys with a new unique gospel. They want to champion something they think is better. Defend the faith by protecting them from the confusion by these false teachers. Defend your faith!

However, risks to our faith are many beyond false teachers in the church. Our faith is threatened by what we watch online and on TV. Our faith is threatened by the music we consume. Our faith is threatened by what we read. Our faith is threatened by the friends we keep. Whatever it is that threatens your faith, do something about it and defend your faith. Avoid these things in defense of your faith!

Now that Apostle Jude guided by the Holy Spirit treated this as an urgent matter, may we also as individuals and communities treat it as an urgent matter. May God grant us wisdom to defend our faith, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
