The Tables Were Turned

Esther 9:1 (NIV) – On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the edict commanded by the king was to be carried out. On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but now the tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them.

The Jews were enslaved and oppressed by the Persian Empire. They were hated by locals. There was a plot by Haman to have a massacre of Jewish people. The plans were at an advanced level. A date had been set when Jews will be killed en mass. The Bible says by the time the date came, the tables were turned!

Haman had planned to have Mordecai a Jewish leader hanged on a pole. Haman built the pole where Mordecai was to be hanged. Haman duped the king to sign an edict that will trigger events that will begin with hanging of Mordecai and then mass killing of Jewish people. When the day came, tables were turned. Haman was hanged on the very pole he had built to hang Mordecai. Tables were turned!

Esther the Queen a Jewish lady, led a three days of fasting and praying. After these three days, she approached the king and pleaded for the lives of Jewish people including her own life. The king was shocked that his own Queen was in danger. In anger he ordered Haman to be hanged on the gallows he prepared for Mordecai. Just like that tables turned against Haman!

The king went further ahead to give another edict. This new edict permitted Jewish people to revenge and kill everyone who had planned to kill them. Jews all over the kingdom were permitted to kill their enemies en mass. On the day the Jews were to be killed, the tables turned and its them who killed their enemies.

Esther 9:1-5 (Message Bible) – On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the king’s order came into effect. This was the very day that the enemies of the Jews had planned to overpower them, BUT THE TABLES WERE NOW TURNED: the Jews overpowered those who hated them! 2  The Jews had gathered in the cities throughout King Xerxes’ provinces to lay hands on those who were seeking their ruin. Not one man was able to stand up against them—fear made cowards of them all. 3  What’s more, all the government officials, satraps, governors—everyone who worked for the king—actually helped the Jews because of Mordecai; they were afraid of him. 4  Mordecai by now was a power in the palace. As Mordecai became more and more powerful, his reputation had grown in all the provinces. 5  SO THE JEWS FINISHED OFF ALL THEIR ENEMIES with the sword, slaughtering them right and left, and did as they pleased to those who hated them.

There is a God who turns tables. There is a God who looks at what goes on in the world and eventually ensures justice is done. It may seem that evil is having the upper hand, but God will see to it that tables turn!

Do not rejoice in evil and injustice. Do not rejoice that you have oppressed and silenced anyone. Do not be excited that you have full control of a situation and you can do what you want. There is a God in heaven who specializes in turning tables. 

God watches what happens in government. God watches what happens at work places. God watches political moves and schemes. God watches the day and night secret meetings. God watches and listens to phone calls and text messages. God knows who is oppressing who. God watches and at the right time He will turn tables in favor of His people who for now seem like underdogs.

God watches what happens in nucleus and extended families. God watches what happens in neighborhoods. God knows who is oppressing who. God knows the orphans. God knows the helpless domestic servants. God knows the favored and unfavored children. God knows the secret pains hidden to create a semblance of order and love. God watches and at the opportune time, tables will turn!

May God forgive us who have ever oppressed anyone. May God save us from despair when we are underdogs, with the hope that He will turn tables in our favor. May God turn tables in our favor. In Jesus name, Amen!
