Zechariah 7:13 – “‘When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,’ says the LORD Almighty.
A taste of your own medicine refers to being treated in a bad way the way you treated others in a bad way. When we treat others in a bad way and we give excuses that we are teaching them hard lessons, some day we will also be treated in a bad way with the same excuse. A taste of your own medicine!
When someone who silences others using violence, is silenced using violence, we say he or she has been given a taste of their own medicine. When someone who schemes against others, gets schemed against successful, it is said he has had a taste of his own medicine. When someone insults others to silence, they will get a taste of their own medicine when they are insulted into silence.
A taste suggests that we didn’t even know how the medicine tastes. We can be busy harassing other people without knowing how they feel. We hurt other people in the course of work and we act like that is how the work is and nothing can be done. We are oblivious of what others feel. The only way for us to taste and know how others feel, is for us to go through the same experience. A taste of your own medicine!
God called Israelites but they ignored Him. Now God promises through Prophet Zechariah that He will give them a taste of their own medicine. The way they ignored Him, He promises to ignore them! When they need Him they won’t find Him!
Zechariah warns the people that disaster is coming. Zechariah warns them to respond to God’s call for them to confess their sins and repent. Zechariah warns them that if they ignore God when He needs them and when they are comfortable, God will ignore them when they desperately need Him. A taste of their own medicine!
We are young, healthy, sharp and energetic. Everything is going on so well. Why would anyone need God? Church is old school and boring. Religious matters are archaic. Using our own philosophies we cast doubt on everything religious. God calls us but we totally ignore Him. We don’t need Him. It doesn’t look like we may ever need Him. God warns that if we ignore His calls now, He will ignore our calls when we desperately need Him. A taste of our own medicine!
Preachers and their calls are suspicious for now. The world is clearly running logically not spiritually, is your false conclusion, therefore you ignore spiritual things. You go slow on faith matters. God will also go slow when you need Him. A taste of your own medicine!
Someday we will need God. When a loved is in a situation may be of sickness and all science has failed. How do we turn to God when we ignore Him now? When we become of age and discover that we need God to help us get a good spouse. We need God for parenting to yield good fruit. We need God for marriage to be happy. We need God when enemies abound in business and at work. We need God to pass exams after doing our best which may not be enough. What if at such a time, God gives us a taste of our own medicine, and ignores us as we ignore Him?
Prophet Zechariah warns that anyone who ignores God, will soon get a taste of their own medicine. God will wait when they need Him most, because such a time always comes to everyone in life. At that time, God will give them a taste of their own medicine! God will ignore them as they ignore Him now.
Genesis 7:10 – And after the seven days the floodwaters came on the earth.
For 120 years Noah preached as He built the Ark. People ignored God. Majority of them concluded Noah was wrong and probably a mental case. When the flood came God ignored them as they drowned to death. A taste of their own medicine!
1 Samuel 28:5 – When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart.
1 Samuel 28:6 – He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.
King Saul ignored God when his government was at its best. King Saul even consulted witches instead of God. Then a threat came to his life that only God could help him. Witches he used to inquire from couldn’t help. He cried to God. He tried everything religious, but God ignored him and didn’t answer him. King Saul got a taste of his own medicine! As he had ignored God, God ignored Him. A taste of his own medicine!
Luke 23:9 – He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.
Herod killed John the Baptist for telling him the truth about his illicit marriage to his brother’s wife. Herod ignored the call of God to please his illegal wife and daughter. When Jesus was brought before Herod and Herod desperately needed answers, Jesus gave him no answer. As he had ignored God’s call, Jesus who is God the Son, ignored him. A taste of his own medicine!
How are you currently treating the things of God? What is your attitude towards the church? When a sermon is preached and a call made, do you ignore, postpone or laugh it off? What is your attitude towards church leaders and even church members? What do you think about supporting the church with your resources? Would you be comfortable if in the near future God treats you the way you treat the church? Are you ready for a taste of your own medicine?
How do you treat people around you? How do you treat your juniors at work? How do you treat your spouse? How do you treat your parents? How do you treat your children? How do you treat widows, orphans, and other needy people? Very soon God will treat you the way you treat others. Are you ready for a taste of your own medicine?
Dear God, forgive me for acting stupid in matters concerning You and others. Save me from a taste of my own medicine. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
