1 Samuel 3:19
The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.
New Living Translation
As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him, and everything Samuel said proved to be reliable.
Amplified Bible
Now Samuel grew; and the LORD was with him and He let none of his words fail [to be fulfilled].
Contemporary English Version
As Samuel grew up, the LORD helped him and made everything Samuel said come true.
A leader loses credibility when her word is unreliable and untrustworthy. A leader who makes promises that he can’t keep will soon be rejected by those he leads. A leader’s words are highly valuable to the followers and they make a big difference.
Leaders should speak hope, love, and concern to the people. Leaders must avoid high-handed dealings and threats. People are led better when they are loved than when they are threatened. It is better to get a loving service than a forced service from the people. Force can ensure that people do the bare minimum. Love empowers people to go beyond the call of duty.
Good leaders should be concerned with how people feel. Good leaders should be concerned with people’s attitudes. Effort can be forced but attitude can’t be regulated. Decisions are not just about profits and losses but also about the impact on individuals and their attitudes.
God was concerned about the words of a leader by the name of Samuel. Samuel was a judge, a prophet, and a priest. God favored Samuel in many ways. Our text today notes that one of the favors God did was to ensure that the words Samuel spoke in public came to pass. God ensured that Samuel was not proved wrong by his words.
Samuel like all leaders would listen to people’s complaints. Then like all leaders, he would make a promise on how the things would be handled to address the complaints. Sometimes the leader speaks too fast to impress but what they promise can’t be implemented. However, for Samuel, when he made such a mistake, God Himself, ensured that what Samuel promised comes to pass.
When Samuel made a promise that required money, even if there was no money, God would provide it, so that Samuel’s word comes true. When Samuel told the people that leaders will ensure a problem doesn’t recur, even if it is a problem that has to recur and has never been stopped by anyone, God ensured that it doesn’t recur so that Samuel’s words come true. God ensured that whatever Samuel promised or said came to pass.
If Samuel said certain behaviors lead to poverty or failure, it became so. If Samuel said certain people will suffer because of their choices it became so. Whatever Samuel said became true, not because he was a clever or wise leader who has deep insight, no, but because God helped him. The outstanding leaders are just ordinary people who are made to stand out by God.
We are all leaders at different levels. We are leaders at the family level. We are leaders in schools and churches. We are leaders at the communities, national and global levels. We could be small leaders or well-renowned leaders, but never the less we are leaders. We may not be leaders today, but we shall be leaders tomorrow by choice or circumstances beyond us. Whatever leader you are, your word is critical in determining your relations with people and even your legacy. Therefore, seek God’s favor in your leadership.
Dear God, favor me as you favored Samuel. Cover my leadership from goofs and embarrassing failures. Guide me with wisdom and interventions that cover my deficiencies, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
