This is The Worst Symptom Ever Beware!

1 Samuel 3:1
The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.

A symptom is a sign suggesting that there is something else going on. Symptoms of Covid-19 include fever, coughing, sore throat, breathing difficulties, etc. If you have these symptoms, it’s possible that you could have contracted the coronavirus. Symptoms are not the disease but a pointer that the disease could be in you. Symptoms warn that something worse than what we see is going on. While other covid symptoms are common with other illnesses, the difficulty with breathing is its worst symptom.

Symptoms of poor money management and poverty may include lack of shelter and clothing. However, lack of food is the worst symptom ever. Lack of food is not just the worst symptom, but its urgent and consequences are dire.

In patient management, the symptoms may have to be managed while treating or investigating the underlying problem. Whatever disease causes headache does not matter, the headache has to be treated too. The worst symptom is an additional problem to the problem one is facing. The worst symptom needs to be addressed while the real problem is also being addressed.

When Samuel was born the spiritual life in Israel was so bad. The Priest Eli had lost control of his office and no longer directed spiritual matters. the Sons of Eli were engaged in immorality and corruption at the temple. Since it is said that people are like their religious leaders, the population had degenerated in their relationship with God. The spiritual life of Israel was dead!

The worst symptom of the times is recorded in our text today. The word of God was rare. The spiritual life of Israel was so bad that the word of God had become rare, almost unheard of. Days, weeks, and months would pass without anyone hearing anyone reading or referring to the word of God. This is the worst symptom of a spiritual near-death experience.

Nobody read the word of God at home. Nobody read the word of God in meetings. Nobody read the word of God at weddings and funerals. Nobody ready the word of God in social gatherings. The priests were probably scholarly and philosophical but they were not associated with the word of God. The Bible says that the word of God was rare. This is the worst symptom in any society, family, and individual’s life.

What we wonder is how did they conduct worship without the word of God? But it happened. How did they sing without referring to the word of God? But they did. The word of God was rare, which means that whenever it appeared it was either in a faint manner, weak manner, or almost negligible, so that rare was the right description. When the word of God is rare, in your life, you are doing badly. This is the worst symptom ever!

Is the word God rare in your speech? Is the word of God rare in your social media posts? Is the word of God rare in your house? Is the word of God rare in your office? Is the word of God rare in your meetings? Is the word of God rare in your critical deliberations? Is the word of God rare in your future plans? The worst symptom of spiritual sickness is when the word of God is rare in your life. This is the worst symptom!

Dear God, restore your word in my life, in my family, at my school and workplace, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
