Ruth 3:14
So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before anyone could be recognized; and he said, “No one must know that a woman came to the threshing floor. ”
Naomi coached Ruth on how to approach Boaz. Ruth was a widow and traditionally Boaz could inherit her as a wife. Naomi encouraged Ruth to get remarried. Widows who are young should be encouraged to get remarried to avoid sinful temptations of promiscuity.
Naomi was an old widow and had no need to remarry. Naomi’s son was the late husband to Ruth. Naomi encouraged Ruth to get remarried. We need more and more Naomi’s in society and in the church who would tactfully and lovingly encourage those bound by traditions to break free and get remarried.
Ruth followed Naomi’s advice and she went to the place where Boaz was. She disguised herself among other women. Late in the night when Boaz was in high spirits after a drink he went and slept at a corner of the threshing floor. Ruth followed him and as instructed by Naomi, she slept at his feet which is traditionally suggestive of one desirous for a marriage.
Boaz got startled at night and woke up when he noticed a woman at his feet. They had a conversation and agreed to pursue possibilities of getting remarried the next day. However, the first step was to clarify is another relative who was much more deserving to remarry Ruth was interested. If he wasn’t interested then Boaz would marry her.
Very early in the morning before others woke up, Boaz and Ruth had to part company so that no one notices that they were together overnight. Relationship issues should be kept wrapped up so that it doesn’t become a business of the public. It is childish and irresponsible to carry out in public certain aspects of relationships.
Some of the things those in relationships should not do in public include public altercation. Public display of affection that is best reserved for private places, etc. The public can easily ruin a relationship if they are roped in. Boaz and Ruth were wise enough to part before anyone knew they met.
As they parted, our text tells us that they agreed to ensure that nobody knows that they had met. They were not hiding a sinful act, they were tactful, to ensure this relationship succeeds. If word had gone out too early, the other relative would blame Boaz for taking his potential wife. To ensure success they kept their date a secret. Eventually, Boaz was declared the right person to remarry Ruth, then the affair became public. Only when it is safe, do we go public. Only when it is complete do we go public.
Numbers 32:23
“But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.
Luke 12:3
What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
If you hide sin, you won’t hide it for long, the Bible, the word of God, assures us that sins will be exposed. Secret sins will come out anyway. God Himself will ensure the bad things you do in secret are exposed. The only things to do in secret are pursuits of goals, whose achievements will gladly surprise everyone. Sins must be confessed and repented. Plans and dreams must be pursued secretly. No one must know your dreams and pursuits. No one should know that a woman was here!
Not everything should go public. Certain things succeed when they remain away from public scrutiny. Boaz would never have married Ruth if the night meeting had gone public. Many of our misfortunes take place because we go public too early. No one should know that a woman was here.
No one should know that you are applying for a new job. No one should know that you are investing in this or that. No one should know that you have issues as a couple (particularly those that are solvable and don’t threaten life). No one should know that you are struggling with this sin or that, except God. No one should know that a woman was here.
No one should know you were paid. No one should know you made a lot of money. No one should know you are traveling. No one should know how you arrived at decisions that don’t concern them. No one who doesn’t need to know should know that you are on medication. No one should know that a woman was here.
No one should know your conversations so don’t share screenshots, videos, and audio. No one should know your sexual prowess, keep it to your spouse. No one should know what can be misunderstood and interfered with. No one should know what would make us be misunderstood. No one should know that a woman was here!
Secrets drive us to work hard until we achieve our goals. Once you tell the secret to a few friends, you lose psyche to pursue that project. Telling your plans and dreams would kill them instantly by killing the all crucial psyche that we need. If you kill your inner drive to pursue something, you will never achieve it. Some goals may need an accountability partner to press you into achieving them. The accountability partner becomes part of the secret. Stressful and depressing issues must be told out to friends, relatives, religious leaders and counselors, or else they can affect us and even cause mental breakdown or death. But our dreams, goals and pursuits must remain secret so that our inner drive pushes us into achievement. No one must know your latest dreams and pursuits. No one must know that a woman was here!
