Esther 2:1
Later when King Xerxes’ fury had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what he had decreed about her.
King Xerxes had fired queen Vashti out of anger. Queen Vashti defied the King’s request publicly and it not only embarrassed the king, but it also hurt. As a result, the king got so angry and divorced her instantly.
The king remained hurt for a while. His loneliness kept reminding him of the day he got embarrassed and hurt. A palace without a queen was a daily reminder. It took time before the king reconciled with reality that what had happened could not be reversed and he should move on.
A clear sign that the king was healing was that he less and less noticed the absence of Vashti. The king was also healing when he could joke about the separation and the pain of Vashti. Time had healed the king. The king through a disciplined forward look, persisted through the darkness of pain until the light came through after recovery.
It is only after the king had recovered that he now thought of finding another queen in place of Vashti. The king knew that no wise decision can be made in moments of anger. During anger deal with anger, but do not make significant decisions in relation to what caused you pain. Do not act during anger. Always act after anger not during anger!
During anger we always make a decision driven and informed by anger. During anger, we are blinded and we only see one side of a two-sided issue. During anger, we apply a permanent solution to temporary problems. During anger all decisions we make are regrettable. Always act after anger not during anger!
Ecclesiastes 7:9
Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,
for anger resides in the lap of fools.
At the moment when you are angry, you are a fool. Do not act while wisdom is hidden and foolishness drives you. Anger has actually been referred to as temporary madness. You do not make major decisions or serious decisions when wisdom is on leave and madness/anger reigns supreme. When you are angry you can explain it by saying that you are mad. A mad person does not make good decisions. Always act after anger and not during anger!
Ecclesiastes 10:4
If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
do not leave your post;
calmness can lay great offenses to rest.
Do not respond to anger with anger. Let it cool down before you respond. If your boss treats you in anger, be calm. Above all else be calm. If you respond in anger, his foolishness will be covered by your foolishness. When attacked in anger, take note the other person is mad and is actually a fool at that moment. Bear with the fool and be calm. Always act after anger and not during anger!
Ephesians 4:26
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
Anger is madness and foolishness, yet it is a natural response to pain and provocation. Since at times anger must come, make it brief. To nurse anger for a prolonged period of time is to prefer foolishness over wisdom. Make anger very brief if you must be angry. Always act after anger and not during anger!
Has a loved one rejected you and your heart is broken? Cry over it and be angry but briefly. During anger do not fall in love with someone else, that will be a foolish decision made by a mad person. Always a mad person doesn’t know they are mad. During anger never swear that you now hate marriage. Time of anger is allowed. Always act after anger and not during anger!
Have you been annoyed at the workplace? Has schooling issues brought you anger? Did a phone call or email cause you anger? Whatever causes anger, accept it and let it pass. Time heals the wound and you will act wiser. Whatever caused your pain, always act after anger and not during anger!
God of heaven, save us from anger and if it happens make it brief. Remind us to always act after anger and not during anger, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
