2 Chronicles 5:6
and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.
King Solomon had completed the construction of the temple. It was time to bring in the Ark of the covenant which was a very important aspect of the temple service. The Ark of the covenant carried the ten commandments of God’s covenant with Israel. Therefore moving this Ark into the temple was a big event in Israel.
The Ark of the covenant was the seat of the glory of God. It was the symbolic presence of God in the temple and in Israel. With the Ark of the covenant came the presence of God. Therefore, placing the Ark in the magnificent temple was a great spiritual event in Israel.
When the Ark went to war with Israelite armies they always won the battles except for one or two times when the Ark was captured. When the Ark was captured, it terrorized the people who captured it until they returned it back to Israel. The story is recorded in 1 Samuel 4-7. Therefore, the Ark was a symbol of safety and security in Israel.
The Ark had the ten commandments that God gave, 2 Chronicles 5:10. The Ark itself was designed by God and built as He instructed in Exodus 25:10. Therefore, the Ark that meant a lot in Israel was a gift from God. Therefore, in order to celebrate the coming of the Ark into the new temple, sacrifices were necessary.
The Israelites’ community was so excited that God had given them the Ark that was now being moved into the temple. They made sacrifices to thank God. Our text today tells us that so many animals were sacrificed. The animals were so many that no one could record or number them. Their love for God was overflowing beyond measure. It is indeed true that things that count can not be counted!
Things that count are things that matter, things that we value. Things that count are important things. To count them is to estimate value or quantity. Things that matter, things that are important can not be quantified. Things that count cannot be counted!
The sacrifice they did for God was very important to them as a nation and as individuals. These temple, the Ark, and worship of God were among the things that count in Israel. The sacrifice they made for God was among the things that count. Things that count cannot be counted!
To count what they gave would have meant limiting their expression of love for God. Since their love for God was unlimited, their sacrifices too were unlimited. These things counted therefore they couldn’t be counted!
Do your tithe and offerings matter? Do they count? If they count then you give so faithfully and frequently that you can no longer count how much you have so far given in a year or even less. Things that count cannot be counted.
Does your service for God count? Then you cannot count how long you have served in a church office as if it is too much. How many times have you helped the needy? If you can count all the times you have helped the needy, then it no longer counts. Things that count cannot be counted. How many times have you forgiven your spouse, your fiancee, your neighbor, etc.? Things that count cannot be counted!
Help us, dear God, that we may do the things that count and that they may never be counted, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
