1 Chronicles 5:25-26
(25) But they were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. (26) So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria), who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara and the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.
The tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh sinned against God after God had granted them unprecedented success. After God gave them victory against their enemies. After god gave them wealth from their enemies. After God gave them peace for so many years, they turned against God.
Success is many times an enemy to spiritual growth. Success deceives us that it is here to stay. Success deceptively looks like a point of no return. Success convinces us that we have made it by our own power. Many times success can eclipse the role of God in the victory we are enjoying.
We only wake up to the reality that all depends on God when all that success fades and we are back to where we needed God. We can be so powerful and influential that it is impossible for it to dawn on us that power is transient and someday we will be as vulnerable as the victims of our power. May God save us from the misleading influence of success and power. May God open our eyes to the reality that success can be gone and we can be vulnerable. The tribes of Israel forgot that success can be short-lived if they do not live according to God’s will.
When God got offended by the unrelenting sins of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, the Bible says He punished them. The Bible tells us that God stirred the spirit of a heathen king who came and punished them by taking them to exile. When God got angry, He stirred the spirit of Pul king of Assyria.
When God stirs the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, it means, prior to the stirring, Pul had no nerve to attack Israel. The stirring of the spirit means, Pul now had ideas and feelings against Israel that earlier on he didn’t have. A stirred Pul was courageous and daring. A stirred Pul was guaranteed success because God was for him but against Israel. The worst that can happen to us is when God stirs someone against us. Dear God don’t stir anyone against me!
God can stir a landlord against a tenant. God can stir a teacher against a student. God can stir the employer against employees. God can stir inspectors against the inspected. God can stir a fiancee against a partner. God can stir lenders against borrowers. God can stir anyone and anything against us if we are not faithful to Him. We are guilty and we deserve the worst from God, but today we pray that God will not stir anyone or anything against us, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
