Matthew 7:28 – When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
Matthew 7:29 – because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Matthew chapter five to chapter seven is the sermon on the Mount of Blessings. During this long and very detailed sermon, Jesus gave His blueprint for life and manifesto for His Kingdom. This sermon showed a clear difference between the Jesus way of life and what was prescribed by religious during that time.
Our focus today is on the reaction of His listeners. When Jesus finished speaking, His listeners were totally astonished. That teaching had touched them in a manner they hadn’t been touched. That teaching was way better and above the teachings of their regular religious leaders.
How He taught captivated the people. What He taught captivated them. What the write concludes is that the How He taught carried the day. How He taught with authority unlike the how of religious leaders who lacked authority. How is as important as why!
Religious leaders kept referring to other religious gurus as their source of authority. Religious leaders sounded like mouth pieces of other experts of scripture. Consequently their teachings seemed to be built on the thoughts of other people and not necessarily the practicality or goodness of the action. They were weak. They had some right content but very poor presentation. They had the what to present but failed in how to present. The how is as important as the what!
Jesus came and explained practical ways of living. Jesus referred to no one except scripture. How Jesus made the presentation made it so sensible to accept and follow. The people could relate. The how Jesus taught made the what He taught better and effective. The how is as important as the what!
Ephesians 4:15 – Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
The truth is the what we speak. In love is the how we speak. The how we speak is as important as the what. It is not enough to know and teach the truth. How we teach it can make it acceptable or rejected. The how is as important as the what!
How do you speak to those who offend you? How do you speak to your children? How do you speak to your spouse? How do you speak to your juniors at work? How do you speak to strangers? How you speak could be the problem even if the what you speak is correct. The how is as important as the what!
If you have a disagreement with anyone, don’t just focus on what was said but on how it was said. Jesus won by how He spoke. Apostle Paul urged the church to be careful on how they speak the truth. The how is as important as the what!
How do you present the Bible truth? How do you explain to those who are wrong that they are wrong? The truth can fail to get to people because of the how we speak it. We may have the what to speak, but fail to ever convert anyone because of how we speak. The how is as important as the what!
In your preaching and teaching, the how is as important as the what. In your parenting, the how is as important as the what. Sometimes you need to be firm with no none sense in order to help the child. Sometimes you need to reason out with them. The how is as important as the what. In all relationships the how is as important as what.
If you fail on the how, even if the what is correct, it will never matter. Mind how you express the good and the bad. Many married couples and people in relationships go through the same struggles but some succeed and some fail because of how they say and do things. The how is as important as the what!
Dear God grant me the knowledge of the what to say and do in all situations. Grant me wisdom to also know the how to say and do in all situations. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
