1 Samuel 2:4
“The bows of the warriors are broken,
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
Reversed roles. When the boss becomes an ordinary worker and when a worker becomes a boss, roles have been reversed. When the rich becomes a beggar and a beggar becomes a wealthy person, roles have been reversed. Beware, reversed roles ahead!
No situation is permanent since God can and will reverse it to His glory. When the privileged abuse their roles and the poor cry for help, God in an unprecedented turn reverses roles to dispense justice. You will not be forever privileged particularly if you abuse your position and use it to champion things that offend God. You will not remain disadvantaged forever, God will intervene and grant you mercy if you remain faithful in your misfortune. Roles will soon be reversed by God, those privileged and those disadvantaged will not remain the same. Beware, reversed roles ahead!
Our passage today is part of the song that Hannah sang to praise God for ending her barrenness and granting her a child. Hannah praises God by making inspired statements that are true in every situation. What stands out in her song is that God reverses roles. Hannah praises God who can reverse any roles and dispense justice to punish the arrogant privileged and the faithful disadvantaged. Beware, reversed roles ahead!
Hannah was barren and had prayed for a child but she had none. Her co-wife in the polygamous marriage made fun of her and really hurt her, 1 Samuel 1:6. After a long time, God granted favor to Hannah and she became exceedingly happy. Her child grew to become a prominent figure in Israel, while her arrogant co-wife is never heard of again. God reversed roles. God can still reverse roles even now. Beware, reversed roles ahead!
In our text today, we are told the warrior has their bow broken, and the weak are strengthened. That is reversed role. When the warrior suddenly becomes weak and the weak suddenly become strong, roles have been reversed. Beware, reversed roles ahead!
The next text 1 Samuel 2:5 tells us that those with food will suddenly lack food and those without getting well-fed. That is a reversal. The same text tells us that the barren will have children, while the one with children pines away. To pine is to experience prolonged sadness because of loneliness. When the one who had children pines away, it means they are experiencing loneliness. Either because children died, or don’t care about them or the husband no longer loves her. Roles have been reversed and it’s painful. Beware, reversed roles ahead!
The God of justice is still alive and active. My role and your role can be reversed without notice or recourse. Be faithful and humble so that the reversal of roles that must and will happen, will be in your favor. May the reversal of roles be in my favor in Jesus’ name, Amen!
