Acts 7:4 – “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.
Acts 7:5 – He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.
Stephen is addressing the Sanhedrin Council that later stoned him to death after this speech. He tells them many things, and what catches our attention is that the Promised Land given to Abraham started small. When it was first given to Abraham It was too small for even only his feet! Big things start small!
When God gave the Promised Land to Abraham, he possessed an area too small it wasn’t enough for his feet. God told him when it seemed impossible, that his descendants will inherit the vast land, yet he didn’t even have a child. How can his children posses the vast land and he has no children at the time of the promise? Big things start in a small way!
When the promise was made to Abraham, other people were occupying the land. The area available to Abraham at the beginning was too small to imagine that all of it would ever be his. Abraham didn’t even have a child yet God promised to give the entire vast land to his children. It was a very small humble beginning. Big things start in a small way!
When the world was created by God, it started small. Day one was just light, nothing more. Judging by day one would make one doubt if God would create the beautiful world that it later became. Big things start small!
The Savior of the world was born as a child to poor parents in a manger in Bethlehem. Who would have thought this is the one who will change the world? Big things start small!
Zechariah 4:10 – “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”
Do not despise what starts in a small way. If God is in it and He has promised big things, it will happen. The temple by Zerubbabel started in a small way. God warned the people not to despise small things. Big things start small.
Do you have a big project? Start small. Are you off to a small start, don’t be discouraged. Big things start small!
May you be encouraged to hang in there even though it’s a small start with baby steps. Pray that God is in it. Have a big vision but start small. May our efforts today be one more evidence that big things start small. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
