2 Kings 6:22 – “Do not kill them,” he answered. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink and then go back to their master.”
2 Kings 6:23 – So he prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. So the bands from Aram stopped raiding Israel’s territory.
Romans 12:20 – On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Some times we get so annoyed by what is done to us to the point of having murderous intentions. This could be as a result of a deep cutting offense or our short tempered nature. Short temper is a symptom of lacking the Holy Spirit and total genuine conversion will be the ideal solution.
If you are short tempered, know that you are not converted to the life changing Christ. When you get converted the acts of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21) will cease and the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) will be seen in your life. Short temper is a symptom that you are hell bound. Seek conversion to end your short temper.
Ephesians 4:26 – “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
Anger is a normal reaction to offense. The Bible tells us to manage our anger. Get angry but manage it so that by sunset, meaning after sometimes, get out of the anger mode. Manage your anger!
A short tempered person is unable to manage their anger. Instead anger manages them. They speak in anger then regret later. They act in anger then regret later. In anger they lose jobs. In anger they end in prison. In anger they die and wait for eternal fires in hell. Just because anger managed them. Does anger manage you? You need to be totally converted so that you manage anger and not let the sun set while you are angry.
We need to pray that anger doesn’t manage us but we manage it. It is okay to get angry. It is not okay for anger to control us and cause us to speak and act in a manner that we regret later.
If in anger you can’t remain civil then anger manages you. If in anger you don’t care, then anger manages you. If in anger you can’t stop talking and threatening, then anger manages you. If in anger you can’t walk away or keep silent in order to keep yourself under control, then anger manages you. If in anger you raise your voice and attract attention and don’t get alarmed that you are making private things public, then anger manages you. If you use anger to unleash words and actions you wouldn’t otherwise unleash, you think you are in control but anger manages you.
“In you anger do not sin.” That suggests that you are in control. You are angry but you are in control. The Bible teaches that every believer must manage their anger. Inability to manage anger is not a birth trait or personality, it is a sinful disposition. Seek conversion, genuine conversion if you are unable to manage your anger!
“Do not, I beg of you, correct your children in anger. That is the time of all times when you should act with humility and patience and prayer. Then is the time to kneel down with the children and ask the Lord for pardon. Seek to win them to Christ by the manifestation of kindness and love, and you will see that a higher power than that of earth is co-operating with your efforts.”CG 245.6-CG 246.1 (The book Child Guidance by Ellen G. White)
“When you are obliged to correct a child, do not raise the voice to a high key…. Do not lose your self-control. The parent who, when correcting a child, gives way to anger is more at fault than the child.” CG 245.6-CG 246.1 (The book Child Guidance by Ellen G. White)
When children offend you, do not discipline your children in anger. Control your anger before disciplining your children. What you say and do in anger, may permanently damage your children more than the mistake they did. Manage your anger when disciplining your children.
Manage your anger when disciplining people under you. This will save you many court cases. This will save you negative energy at work. Manage your anger. Only true conversion and the power of the Holy Spirit can help us manage our anger!
Don’t let anger manage you until you start plotting and scheme how to hurt someone else. That scheming is sin. Those secret meetings are sinful. You plan, succeed, hurt the person, but you will be deregistered from eternal life. However much you make it look like an act of principle, God knows that an unforgiving spirit and long seated anger are managing your meticulous unrelenting actions against someone. Are you setting up children against your marital partner? Are you targeting someone in business or at work who offended you? God knows your actions and plans are based on anger controlling you. Manage your anger!
The story in 2 Kings cited at the beginning tells us that prophet Elisha told the king not to kill his enemies but instead to feed them. The book of Romans 12 also cited at the beginning tells us to treat our enemies well. All these are only possible if you can control your anger.
When the king heard the words of prophet Elisha, he made a huge feast for the captured enemy soldiers. After that feast he released the captives. After that there was peace in Israel. A peaceful life will come if we treat our enemies well with right caution and managed anger.
If you feel like killing someone who has offended you, manage your anger. Walk away. Keep silent. Retreat in private and pray. Then when anger is under control, treat your offender well beyond their expectations. Peace from God will be your portion.
May God help us to manage anger and treat our offenders well, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
