Don’t Worry God is Laughing At Them!

Psalms 2:4
The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them.

Amplified Bible
He who sits [enthroned] in the heavens laughs [at their rebellion]; The [Sovereign] Lord scoffs at them [and in supreme contempt He mocks them].

Good News Translation
From his throne in heaven the Lord laughs and mocks their feeble plans.

David had various enemies that were plotting to kill him and to prevent him from rising to the royal throne that God had ordained him for. David would receive intelligence reports of how his enemies were busy planning to bring him down. David would receive reports of their meetings and strategies.

David being a musician would compose a song to comfort himself during such times when it seems it was just him against the whole world. Our chapter of consideration today is such a song.

Psalms 2:1-2
Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,

In our psalm today, David tells us that the nations are busy planning against him. Nations and kings conspire to bring together a huge army that would obliterate Israel. David wonders why they do this. It is difficult to explain what paranoid people and jealous people do. You can’t explain why they do what they do to those they falsely think are their enemies.

Why do they conspire David wonders? Without being offended, they conspire. Without provocation, they conspire. Based on false allegations they conspire. Based on their own interpretations of unrelated events, they conspire. Conspiring against the innocent who means no harm. Why do they conspire David wonders?

David tells us that after they conspire and come up with a powerful plan to bring David down and after they are sure Israel will suffer loss, God of heaven responds. How does God respond? God laughs at them. God laughs at their best plan for they are silly plans. After they finish planning and walk away from the planning meeting in some secret location, feeling important and in control, God laughs at them!

David sings this song telling Israelites who may have heard of such scary plans that they should not worry because God knows about the plans and He has responded by laughing. The best human plans are totally laughable before our God. So David gives this message to all Israelites and believers. Don’t worry God is laughing at them!

God anointed David to be king. As they plan to get another king to thwart God’s plan, God laughs at them. How can they even imagine that God can anoint David and someone else other than that becomes king? Omnipotent God for whom nothing is impossible? God laughs at them!

To plot against David and Israelites is to plot against God. As you strategize and believe that you got it well covered and will end in your success, God laughs at you. God laughs at you because you don’t know it is Him you are contending with. The message to all of us is simple. Don’t worry God is laughing at them!

As Nebuchadnezzar and team heat up the furnace seven times hotter to destroy God’s people, God was laughing. God laughed because He had already made His people fireproof and so this heating of fire was a total waste. As they added fuel, God laughed harder. Is someone or are some people planning to put you in a fire? Don’t worry God is laughing at them!

As they planned to throw Daniel in the Lions’ den, God was laughing. God was laughing because He had already turned the lions in that den to be vegetarian and without appetite for anything. As they planned how to set up Daniel, God was laughing. As they developed unchangeable laws, God was laughing because He knew the next day they will change that unchangeable law. Has someone plotted a lions’ den for you? Don’t worry God is laughing at them!

The rich fool ignored God in his life and plans. He was too busy making money to think about God and what God expects. He was so busy and managed to have a very successful bumper harvest. All this time God was laughing at him because the day when he thinks he will now enjoy life after the successful business is the day of his death. As he ignored God and Religious things thinking he is very objective and hard-working, God was laughing at him. Don’t worry God is laughing at them!

Do not worry about wicked people who are enjoying sinful living making you seem unwise and incapable of enjoying life. God is laughing at them because of what is coming. Do not worry if you are on God’s side, because anyone against you is challenging God Himself and God is laughing at them!
