2 Corinthians 2:6
The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient.
Contemporary English Version
Most of you have already pointed out the wrong that person did, and this is punishment enough for what was done.
Enough means no more no less. Enough means what has been done is now sufficient. Enough means the need that existed has been satisfied. It is enough!
Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthian church about a brother who offended them. Paul tells them that when everyone pointed out the brother’s wrong it was enough. It was enough because being accused by everyone else weighs heavily on anyone. What the offender has gone through while being condemned is enough punishment. It is enough!
Paul wrote this because he wanted the church to understand that we don’t punish to destroy but to rectify. Punishment or discipline should be redemptive. Once the point has been made. Once the offense has been highlighted. Once the disappointment has been expressed. It is enough!
Now redeem the person. Now win back the person. Now heal the wounds. Now go back to the beauty of how you related in the past. The punishment is enough, now move towards redeeming the offender. It is enough!
This message also targeted those who pretend to be disciplining wrong yet they have a vendetta. They punish in a huge way a small offense. They punish with an intention of forever punishing the individual. Paul tells the church that it is not the way to go. Discipline or punishment must be measured. We must reach a point sooner than later where we say it is enough!
Once you have expressed your disappointment. Once the other person knows they were wrong. Do not sustain hostility. It is not in the spirit of Jesus to remain hostile. End the hostility by forgiving and restoring. Make a declaration that it is enough!
Your disagreement with your neighbors must now end. It is enough. Your spouse has known they were wrong, it is enough. Your worker now knows what should be done, it is enough. We now know you are the boss, it is enough. You have proved that you have power and authority, it is now enough. Your child or parent or friend has learned the lesson. It is enough!
Dear God, enable us to know and stop when it is enough, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
