John 6:20 – But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
Disciples got into the boat and started sailing to the other side of the lake. For some reason they left Jesus behind and went without Him. The lake was rough. As they were struggling with stabilizing the boat, Jesus appeared walking on water.
They were afraid because people don’t walk on water. For anyone to walk on water it meant that person was supernatural. Myths also had it that ghosts were around the lake and particularly at night. They had every right to be afraid.
Jesus addressed their fears by declaring the words in our text of consideration today. “It is I; don’t be afraid.” Those words are also meant for us today. “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
The reason they shouldn’t be afraid is because it is Him. “It is I; don’t be afraid.” If it was someone else, they have every reason to be afraid. “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
If God allowed Joseph to be sold as a slave then Joseph shouldn’t be afraid. As he suffers in slavery, missing home, he should hear and remember these words. “It is I; don’t be afraid.” It is I God who allowed you to be brought here. Don’t fear it shall be well. “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
God calls Jeremiah and tells him I chose you long before you were born. I chose your to be a prophet. If you find anything difficult in the work I sent you to do, don’t fear because it is Me who sent you there. “It is I; don’t be afraid.” When Israelites and their kings ridicule you and persecute you and you fear you will lose your life, remember my words. “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
If God is in it, don’t be afraid. If God is part of it, don’t be afraid. “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
Did you pray about that Job? You are sure it doesn’t contradict anything biblical? Whatever goes wrong don’t be afraid because God is with you. He speaks to you in the crisis of that Job and He says, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
Did you pray about that relationship? Have you ensured your role and part in the relationship does not contradict anything in the Bible? If that is so, then God is in it, and He speaks to you as you struggle in this relationship, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
Psalms 23:4 – Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Even if the worst happens and God is on your side, you are safe. God maybe in it and still the worst happens. But at the end you will laugh last and rejoice forever. For now God speaks you in your struggles, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
What crisis are you facing today? What are you struggling with? What is making you lose hope? What do you fear? May you hear these words from God Himself today, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” In Jesus’s name, Amen!
