Leaders Need Blood on Their Right Ear, Thumb and Toe

Leviticus 8:23 – Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.

Leviticus 8:24 – Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar.

Leviticus chapter eight is the record of how Moses ordained Aaron and his sons into leadership of the Sanctuary. Moses does what God told him. The details show that our God loves details. Our God loves detailed services that have meaning and impact.

God asks the congregation to come and witness these events. That means every aspect of worship should have meaning to observers. Worshippers must be edified by what is done and said during worship. Avoid any action and talk that harms or does not edify. God has gathered His people and they must be given value for time.

What curiously catches our attention in this ordination ceremony, is when Moses applies blood on the right ear lobe, thumb of the right hand, and on the big toe of the right foot. What does this application of blood imply?

Moses does this for Aaron the high priest and to his sons. What does the blood mean? Why the right side? Why the ear, hand and foot?

The blood used at the Sanctuary was a shadow of the blood of Jesus that was shed on calvary. That blood washes us from unrighteousness. That blood makes us to belong to God. That blood makes us servants of God who act at His behest.

Application of blood anywhere therefore was to cleanse whatever and whoever the blood was applied on. The blood was applied on the altar to cleanse it. It was applied on clothes to cleanse them. It was applied as a divine cleansing agent.

Why therefore did the right ear lobe need cleansing? Why did the right thumb need cleansing? Why did the right big toe need cleansing?

The ear is for listening. The right ear suggests the important function of listening in leadership. A leader who doesn’t listen to God and others will fail. A leader who listens to the wrong stuff will fail. A leader must listen but be influenced by God. The cleansing therefore of the right ear lobe is the cleansing of the leader’s listening.

When a leader’s ear is cleansed, it means that all the past biases that they had listened to and accepted have been deleted and removed. When a leader’s ear is cleansed, it means God regulates what the leader listens to. When a leader’s ear is cleansed, they will listen to everyone but be influenced by God only. When a leader’s ear is cleansed, they will not be selective in giving a listening ear to favourites only, but to all who need their help. Leaders need their ears cleansed! Touched by blood!

The thumb supports all the functions of the hand. Without the thumb one will struggle doing somethings using their hands.The thumb makes work possible. The right hand represents our productivity. The right hand represents the work we do everyday for a living. The thumb is the key support of that work. Without the thumb, there will be no grip that makes work possible. The thumb provides the grip!

Revelation 13:16 – It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,

Receiving the mark on the right hand or on the forehead suggests the reason why the mark has been accepted by the recipient. Those who receive it on their forehead, receive the mark out of conviction that it is the better way of life. They are convinced that this mark is the preferable way of life.

Those who receive the mark on their right hand, do so out of convenience. This is because without the mark, they cannot buy and sell. That means without  the mark their income will be affected. Therefore out of convenience to their source of income they accept the mark. Not because they are convinced but because they need to continue working (using their right hand) in order to earn an income. Therefor they receive the mark on their right hand.

Therefore the right hand has everything to do with our day to day work that provides us with income. The right hand has to do with our official functions. The right hand has to do with what we are employed to do. Critical in that right hand is the thumb that facilitates grip. The right hand thumb, without which the right hand is weakened. That thumb is what God cleanses.

By cleansing the right thumb, God has cleansed the entire right hand. By cleansing the right thumb, God is telling us that He wants to be part of what we do for a daily living. By cleansing the right thumb of a leader, God is getting involved in all the critical and otherwise functions of that leaders life. By cleansing the right thumb, we become co-workers with God. We need our right thumbs cleansed!

The cleansing of the right thumb, means that God now influences our daily work. All activities of the leader are now influenced by God. The cleansing means past influences have been disabled. If one was influenced by pursuit of lucre now they are cleansed. If one was influenced by those who gave the office, now they are cleansed and free from owing anyone any favour that affects the work. Cleansing means the leader begins with a clean slate! All leaders need their thumbs cleansed urgently!

Legs suggest a key supporting structure of the human body. Legs are also critical for movement. By cleansing the big toe of the right foot, the leader’s support structure has been cleansed. God is now the official support structure. 

1 Samuel 30:6 – David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.

When everyone turned against David, he lost the earthly human support structure. However, God stepped in and became David’s support structure. That is what cleansing does. God comes in to support you as a leader, even when everyone turns against you. A cleansed right big toe means God is your support structure at all times.

If God is your support structure as a leader, you do not need to sin in order to impress the human support structure. You do not need to steal. You do not need to bypass rules. You just do the right thing knowing that if the human structure fails, God will never leave you nor forsake you. This is what makes leaders stable and resolute. A right foot big toe that is cleansed with blood! 

Legs are also critical for movement and direction. A leader needs to move. A leader needs direction. The movement and direction needs cleansing. When your movement is cleansed, it moves towards development and prosperity. When your direction is cleansed, you make the right choices and move in the right direction. May our right foot big toes be cleansed that as leaders we will have the proper movement and direction.

Dear God I need your blood applied on my ear lobes, thumbs and toes. Cleanse me and take over my leadership. Have your way and work through me. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
