Never Again!

Revelation 7:16 – ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat.

Revelation 7:17 – For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

Never again is a slogan associated with the world’s resolve that the holocaust and similar mass murder or attempt to wipe out a race will not happen again. Never again is also a campaign associated with ensuring the Rwanda genocide of 1994 and similar mass killings do not occur again. Never again!

The horrors of the holocaust and Rwanda’s genocide caused the right thinking people to say – never again! Senseless murder – never again. Killing non-combatants- never again. Attempting to kill people of a community to wipe them from the world map – never again!

The Bible has its own never again. The Biblical version of never again is approximately two thousand years old. When John the Revelator was shown a vision of heaven. He sees people in heaven. One of the elders around God’s throne introduces the uncountable multitude around the throne. He says these are they who have come out of the great tribulations. They have gone through distress!

Then the elder continues to tell John that this people will now have a better life. Never again will they hunger. Never again will they thirst. Never again will the weather be against them. God has promised – Never Again!

The reason why it will never happen again is that the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their Shepherd. With Jesus directly in charge we can confidently say – never again! God will wipe away our tears and assure us that it will not happen again. Never again!

For now it has to happen. For now we must persevere. For now we endure. For now we must feel the pain. Let us have this hope that God will declare a never again moment for all that we are going through. Never again!

Never again will they suffer sickness. Never again will they struggle with weight. Never again will they have to wake up and exercise to keep healthy. Never again will they have to select foods to preserve health. Never again will they need food supplements. Never again will they have to survive on regular medications. Never again will they have to declare that they are suffering from something or struggling with something. Never again!

Never again will they be heartbroken. Never again will they be hurt by insults and rejection. Never again will they be played. Never again will they seek counsellors. Never again will they live with toxic people in toxic homes, workplaces, etc. Never again!

Never again will schemers scheme. Never again will secret meetings be held to hurt others. Never again will lies be peddled. Never again will cartels thrive. Never again will a small group hold any organisation hostage. Never again!

Never again will people be jobless. Never again will businesses fail. Never again will partners deceive each other. Never again will projects sink with all the person had invested in their lifetime. Never again will governments set laws that harm the majority and benefit the few. Never again!

Never again is a sure and reliable promise. Between now and when it will be declared, keep hope alive! May God declare a – Never Again- to our present pains, struggles and challenges. Never again, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
