Ecclesiastes 5:4-6
(4) When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. (5) It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. (6) Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands?
A vow is a promise made in the name of God. A vow is a promise that makes God a guarantor. A vow is a binding promise that enables two parties to work together. Once you vow it’s too late.
Examples of vows include marriage vows. Partners promise to stick by each other’s side under all circumstances. They promise to be faithful. They promise that only death will separate them. Once you vow it’s too late.
We have baptism vows that are taken by those who are joining the church. They vow to uphold the beliefs they have been taught. They vow to support the church. The vow not to abandon faith. Once you vow it’s too late.
We have vows like the oath of office. The oath of office is taken by those assuming public office. They promise to serve the interest of the public first and above all. They promise to be faithful to the common law governing everyone, particularly the constitution. In their vows, they promise not to engage in unethical conduct as they serve the public. Once you vow it’s too late.
We have other vows that we make in form of agreements. We agree to a purchase agreement. We agree to a money lending agreement. We agree to a sharing agreement. Once you vow it’s too late.
The Bible tells us today that once a vow is made in the name of God, it must be fulfilled. If you promise God something, you have no other option but by all means to fulfill it. The Bible tells us that it will be foolish to delay fulfilling a vow made to God. If delaying is foolish, what about failure to fulfill? Once you make a vow to God, just go ahead and fulfill it. Once you vow it’s too late!
Be careful before making a vow. Once you make a vow, you can only exit through the mechanisms provided in the vow. Do not rush to make a vow. Once you vow it’s too late.
The only vow you can easily and safely exit is a vow that was done contrary to God’s will. God will help you and support you to exit that vow. All vows must be done consistently with the will of God. Once you vow it’s too late!
May God help us to be careful before making vows. May God help us to fulfill the vows we have already made. May God empower us to exit evil vows, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
