We all admire excellence in any and every area in life. We would all want to be identified as excellent people. As we work hard in life, what are the signs and symptoms of excellence?
The study of the book of Daniel chapter six will introduce some signs and symptoms of excellence in anything we do. Ask yourself if you can be associated and identified with these signs and symptoms of excellence.
Delegation
Daniel 6:1 – It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom,
Delegation is sharing responsibilities so that it is well done since everyone is handling a small bit. King Darius shared responsibility with 120 leaders all over his kingdom- that is delegating. Delegation means the leader assigns many other people under him work to do. Delegation contributes to synergy. Delegation ensures everybody is involved and works towards overall success.
Clear Organisational Structure
Daniel 6:2 – with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss.
A clear organisational structure ensures that everyone is responsible for something. There is a chain of command. Each person is held accountable for something and that ensures quality performance and makes it easy to identify weak points that need attention.
Clear Job Description
Daniel 6:2 – with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss.
A job description spells out what is expected of each office. The job description here was that there should be no losses. Excellence requires that specific objectives are met. The job description removes ambiguity and provides the desired focus on success.
Distinguished and Exceptional
Daniel 6:3 – Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.
Anyone who stands out, cannot be dispensed off by any organisation. Anyone with exceptional abilities will be sought after. Daniel was a distinguished Jewish leader in Babylon. We must pursue excellence in everything we do.
Attracting Fault Finders and Envious People
Daniel 6:4 – At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.
When we excel, we attract admirers and haters. Many times our admirers are strangers while haters are familiar people we least expected to turn against us. Haters major on identifying our faults to discourage us, while those who support should be busy with providing us with positive energy. If you attract fault finders and envious people take heart it is a sign and symptom that you are on the path to excellence. Someone correctly said that only a tree with desirable fruits will get stoned.
Corruption Free
Daniel 6:4 – At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.
A person who is not corrupt. A person who does not pursue personal gain at the expense of an organization. A person who can be trusted not to be unethical and not plunder the work place. Such a person will succeed and excel.
A Person Associated With God
Daniel 6:5 – Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”
A person associated with God lives a righteous holy life. A person associated with God will be regulated and controlled by the faith they have. This person will do their best for God’s sake.
Unyielding Principles
Daniel 6:10 – Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
Daniel had principles he couldn’t bend or break. Daniel had a philosophy of life that no threat real or otherwise could cause him to deviate from. A principled person is focused person. A principled person will deliver.
Consistency and Reliability
Daniel 6:10 – Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
Consistency means circumstances don’t change you or your philosophy. Consistency means you will do what you committed to do under favorable and unfavorable conditions.
God Intervenes
Daniel 6:16 – So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”
Excellence is certain if God is involved. We do the possible, God does the impossible and the result is excellence. If you want to succeed, don’t work alone, work with God.
May these signs and symptoms be your characteristics wherever you go and serve in Jesus’ name, Amen!
