John 1:23
John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
When John the Baptist was asked to introduce himself, he first stated who he wasn’t as explained in another article. Next, he refuted what others thought he was. Finally, he said that he was a voice calling from the wilderness. He said that he was preparing the way for the coming of Jesus. John described himself through his God-given assignment on earth. Professions and their titles are a description of what people do to earn their daily bread. Plumbers are about what they do. Electricians no doubt describe their daily business. Musicians or artists have it all said in that title. Cobbler, teacher, lecturer, researcher, driver, pilot, it is all about what they do every day. John used the same kind of description to introduce himself. John explained what he does for God and His kingdom. He introduced himself as a preacher of God’s word to prepare people for the coming Messiah, that was his God-given assignment. Can you describe yourself using your God-given assignment?
We are understood when we introduce ourselves by what we do daily. What if we introduced ourselves by what we do for God and His church, won’t we be understood much better? Once our profession is clear, others know how to engage us and we become useful to them because we are known for what we do for the money. What if we were also known for what we do for God? Can you describe yourself using your God-given assignment?
Romans 1:1
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God —
Apostle Paul in his epistles introduced himself by what he did for God and the church. Paul was an educated man. Paul had status in society. Paul was also a professional tent-maker. Yet he introduced himself by what he did for Jesus. Can you describe yourself using your God-given assignment?
When we introduce ourselves, we do it using titles and terminologies that we are proud of. It affirms our commitment to that profession. It creates a point at which we wish the world to interact with us. We introduce ourselves by our marital status to attract mates or to draw boundaries. We sometimes avoid introducing ourselves by our marital status so that we do not encourage a discussion in that aspect of life. How we introduce ourselves, shows where our passion and point of interaction should be. Can you describe yourself using your God-given assignment?
I am a musician who sings biblical messages. I am the preacher who gives clarity to what is God’s will for everyone. I am the leader who is not paid but I passionately ensure a church department under my care thrives. I am the giver whose income ensures God’s work does not lack resources. I am a supporter of church programs that ensures no leader is discouraged by lack of support. I am the hospitable member who makes all visitors to be comfortable in the church. Can you describe yourself using your God-given assignment?
What we are ashamed of, we avoid. If we are ashamed of our calling as believers, we will not introduce ourselves as such and we will avoid that divine call. Are we ashamed of assignments God gave us?
When we begin to describe ourselves by our church assignments, something will change in our lives. We will be sensitive to the church mission. We will adjust and live according to who we think we are. We will perfect our assignment and calling. May God help us to find the importance of introducing ourselves by what we do for Him, not for pride but for God’s glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
