Hosea 6:4 – “What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears. (NIV)
6:4 “What am I to do with you, Ephraim?
What do I make of you, Judah?
Your declarations of love last no longer
than morning mist and predawn dew. (Message Bible)
Erratic love refers to love that someone shows you in unpredictable installments. Love should be flowing in a reliable consistency, but erratic love is on and off. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
Erratic loves gives you hope then leaves you hanging for the one expressing love has disappeared. Erratic love always leaves you wondering why it stopped again for the umpteenth time. One moment you are loved and next moment the lover disappears and goes quiet. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
One moment you are in great communication, next moment you are communicating to a none-responsive person. You don’t get enough and it doesn’t seem to matter to your erratic lover. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
One moment you are a happy couple, next moment you’re at war over unclear issues. Erratic love shifts suddenly like a violent pendulum. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
Erratic love hurts you because the erratic lover is the object of your love. It is him or her you want to love, but they act erratically. It is us that God loves. It is us that we are responding to God’s love erratically. One moment we love Him passionately, next moment we act as if we don’t need Him and He doesn’t exist. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
In our Bible text today, God is tired of our erratic love. God says erratic love is like morning dew, you think you have it, but when the Sun rises it disappears. Love that you can’t count on. You can’t plan with erratic love. You always get disappointed. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
You plan an event with an erratic lover, but on the material day they are disinterested or gone silent. It’s draining and tiring to be in an erratic love relationship. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
God asks His people to tell Him what He should do with them. God can’t plan anything with them. They erratically disappoint God. Erratic love irritates and hurts even God.
Hosea 6:5 – Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets, I killed you with the words of my mouth — then my judgments go forth like the sun.(NIV)
6:5 That’s why I use prophets to shake you to attention, why my words cut you to the quick: To wake you up to my judgment blazing like light. (Message Bible)
God says He sent prophets with cutting words and sermons to warn the people that He is tired of their erratic love. God sent prophets with words of judgement. Judgment has to do with decision making. God warned the people that He is about to make a decision about this erratic love. A decision to end this irritating and hurting erratic love.
If you are dealing with an erratic lover, do what God did. Bring up the topic. Talk about it in clear words. Explain the problem and let the erratic lover know that you will have to make a decision because this roller coaster will not be entertained. Let the erratic lover know you may have to end this irritating and painful erratic love.
Revelation 3:15 – I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
Revelation 3:16 – So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
God will not forever entertain unclear love from us. God says He will end this erratic love permanently never to return again. If you are not married, this too may be the solution for an erratic love relationship.
Hosea 6:6 – For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. (NIV)
6:6 I’m after love that lasts, not more religion. I want you to know God, not go to more prayer meetings. (Message Bible)
God says He wants permanent stable long lasting love. God doesn’t want isolated evidences of love here and there. God wants a demonstration that our hearts are committed to Him.
May God save us from erratic love and lovers. May God forgive us for loving Him erratically. May we love and be loved clearly and consistently or have the courage to end that draining relationship. May our love for God be clear and consistent, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
