Micah 6:8 – He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
If this was the marking scheme, would you pass this test? A marking scheme is a standard which is used to measure how well you are doing. A marking scheme is a set of correct answers used to determine if the answers you have given in an exam are correct. If this was the marking scheme would you pass the test?
Micah 6:6 – With what shall I come before the LORD and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?
Micah the prophet asks the question on behalf of the people Israel. What is the marking scheme of what pleases God. What can I do to impress God? What does God expect from me? What is the marking scheme?
Micah 6:7 – Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
Micah attempts to give answers of what the marking scheme could be. Is it sacrificing thousands of rams? Is that the marking scheme? Is it rivers of olive oil? Is it sacrificing the firstborn child? Is that the marking scheme?
Micah 6:8 – He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.(NIV)
6:8 – But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don’t take yourself too seriously— take God seriously. (Message Bible)
Prophet Micah eventually gives the marking scheme. It is in how you treat others. Treat others justly and fairly. Love others and show them mercy. Then relate humbly with God. That is the marking scheme.
God does not expect any expensive sacrifices from us if our relationship with others is poor. God is not interested in show of faith that doesn’t include treating others well. How you treat others is the marking scheme.
Faithful attendance of worship is not the marking scheme. Being the greatest giver is not the marking scheme. Involvement in church activities is not the marking scheme. Preaching, teaching and singing religious songs is not the marking scheme. How you treat others is the marking scheme.
Are you fair and just when you have an interest in the decision you are making. Will those who are not your friends or relatives get justice if you were to make a decision and your favorite people are involved? How you treat others is the marking scheme.
Do you treat people so well so that no evidence of racism, tribalism, nepotism, can be produced against you? Are you very fair and just that details of a case you handled can be scrutinized publicly without exposing that you are biased? Are other people confident that with you they will get justice? How you treat others is the marking scheme.
Are you merciful? Are you merciful enough to forgive those who hurt you? Do those who are under you describe you as merciful? Does your close family and friends describe you as merciful? How you treat others is the marking scheme.
Everyone deserves mercy because we are them except by God’s grace. We would be as wicked as them. We would be in trouble like them. We would be on the receiving end of the disciplinary committee like them. As you make decisions about those on the wrong, err on the side of mercy, for you are them except by grace. How you treat others is the marking scheme.
How you treat others emanates from who you are at the core. Who you are at the core is a result of your acceptance or rejection of God’s call and guidance in your life. If God has changed you, it will be seen in how you treat others. If God hasn’t changed you, your hypocrisy will be exposed by how you treat others. How you treat others is the marking scheme.
May God work on me completely and thoroughly so that I treat others like a converted person. I treat my students, colleagues, spouse, children, neighbors, enemies, etc., like a converted person who is merciful and just, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
